As part of our current theme theme “Unity in the Community” class four visited the Roberts Room in Boldon Community Centre and met with members of Boldon Heritage and Miners groups. We heard about the colliery in Boldon, real life experiences of working down the mine and school life in the past.
The children were shocked to learn In the 1960s boys as young as 15 would work down the pit and that 200 years ago children as young as 5 would have worked worked in the mines.
Everyone was very impressed at the super questions the children asked. We also had the opportunity to look at some of the artefacts displayed in the room.
The session was finished off with us finding out about the heritage groups current project to create a permanent memorial to commemorate the soldiers and miners from Boldon’s past – a perfect example of unity in the community.
Class 4, myself, Miss Skiggs and Miss Bellman couldn’t be prouder of you all – perfect representatives of our school. A big thank you to Sean, Tom and Bill for giving up your time and for your superb presentation.
