Strive for Five!

13th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Well done to the children who won the Strive for 5 raffle today. They received a special prize to celebrate their excellent attendance this week.

Strive for 5 is one of our attendance initiatives. If children attend school for 5 consecutive days and arrive on time all week, each Friday their name will be put into a raffle. A winner from each class will be selected.

Bridge Blunder!

13th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

The Yeah 4 and 5 STEM club started tonight. The children were tasked with fixing a companies problem with a broken bridge. Each group spent time looking at different bridges and deciding on a shape before creating their own bridge.

We then tested each bridge by placing weights on it until it collapsed: 2 bridges held over 1kg!!!

A great evening had by all! Roaring Rockets next week 🚀

The face and the body

6th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 started a new topic in French this week- parts of the face and body!

They started the session recapping their last topic on animals. Then looked at the head, the children were introduce to the words for head, ears, eyes, nose, mouth and hair. They played several games to learn and practice saying and seeing the words in both French and English.

Then they put our listening skills to the test. The children had to listen to a description of an alien and draw it. They used the new words for face and used their prior knowledge of French numbers to work out whether the aliens needed 1 or 13 eyes! Take a look at their aliens.

Dragons of the Dark Woods

29th April 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 finished their Literacy topic on “Dragons of the Dark Woods” by creating their own dragons eyes.

They learnt about how texture is created in images and sculptures and then had a go at sketching pictures of dragons eyes. They then designed their own dragons eyes before practising clay skills. They learnt how to make spirals, flowers and leaves etc and then followed their designs to make intricate patterns. Once dry, they painted them with metallic acrylic paints.

They look absolutely amazing and the children are so proud!

They then produced some amazing fact files about their own dragons that they created using lots of features such as subheadings, varied sentence openers and scientific words! They displayed them proudly alongside their dragons eyes.

Healthy Eating

4th April 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 have been learning all about Healthy Eating this half term. They now know about the different food groups, the correct ratios for the food groups and how to choose healthy options for themselves. This week we have moved onto careers involving food and had a visit from our school cook- Mandy. The children prepared questions such as:
-How do you choose the menu? -How do you ensure we have a healthy diet?
-What qualifications do you need to be a school cook?
-What roles are there in the kitchen?
-Do you enjoy your job?

The children listened to Mandy and received lots of information for their next task- designing a school menu.

Thank you Mandy for visiting us this week. 😊

British Science Week in Year 4

28th March 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 took part in the Outdoor Gym Challenge as part of Science Week. This year the theme is all about growth, we looked at why growth is important to our development and health.

The task was to think about ways to grow physically but to find ways that everyone could enjoy it with an outdoor gym. We tested out exercises that needed NO EQUIPMENT such as squats, planks, sprints and sit ups. The children even created a few exercises of their own. They then created an exercise plan that added up to no more than 10 minutes for another group to complete.

The children in Year 4 loved this activity and when evaluating the task they said, “We were so surprised how many things you could do without equipment.” They also said, “We found it difficult to choose exercises that were right for everyone, not too hard or too easy.”

Blue and Yellow for Ukraine

25th March 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Today, children were invited to come to school to raise awareness, raise funds and show solidarity with Ukraine. They were able to come to school in non-uniform, wearing something blue, yellow or a combination of the two. We are really proud of how our children embraced this – just look at these lovely photos!

Note to parents: Thank you so much for your donations. We will be collecting again at the KS2 Mother’s Day Assemblies and then we will let you know how much we have raised for the Red Cross Ukraine Appeal.

Wear Red for CHUF Day 28th Feb 2022

1st March 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Heart Month banner

On Monday 28th February, the children of West Boldon Primary School wore red to raise money for local charity CHUF.

CHUF stands for Children’s Heart Unit Fund which is based at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. The charity supports the children and families who receive treatment at the Freeman and the many other hospitals providing cardiac care for patients throughout the North-East of England. They raise vital funds for pieces of equipment, facilities, aftercare, salaries and research. Freeman Hospital is also one of only two hospitals in the UK performing heart transplants for babies and children.

To raise money, children took part in a cake sale, and a ‘guess the hearts in the jar’ game. Altogether we managed to raise a huge £302.95 – all heading straight to CHUF to make some miracles happen!

Don’t we all look amazing in red!

11th February 2022Miss K. Wilkinson
CMHW logo

Children at West Boldon Primary celebrated Children’s Mental Health Week this week (February 7th – 13th 2022).

Mrs Askwith (our pastoral and wellbeing mentor) spent some time with each class, talking about our own wellbeing, spreading kindness, and focussing on this year’s theme ‘Growing Together’.

Children also took part in a yoga session where they channelled all of their energy, worries and anxieties. Everyone came out of their session incredibly calm!

Finally, on Friday, to round off the week, children were invited to come to school wearing their most expressive outfits to ‘Dress to Express’, sharing their individuality and celebrating their uniqueness.

What a wonderful week we have had!
