Year 1/2 Go Wild at Northumberland Zoo!

25th June 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

As part of our Going Wild topic, our amazing Year 1/2 children had an unforgettable adventure at Northumberland Zoo!

The trip brought our learning on animal classification to life —from mammals and birds to reptiles and amphibians, the children were fantastic at spotting features and talking all about habitats, diets, and animal groups.

We were so proud of their curiosity, enthusiasm, and brilliant behaviour throughout the day They showed great respect, kindness, and were true ambassadors of West Boldon Primary!

️Every child has brought home a FREE return ticket – so they can go back and share their learning with family!

A huge thank you to the team at Northumberland Zoo for such a fantastic experience – and to our incredible pupils for making it so special!

Year 1/2 and the Nissan Enterprise Workshop

18th June 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

Our young engineers got hands-on building their own LEGO cars, discovered fascinating facts about our local Nissan plant, and even let their imaginations run wild designing cars of the future!

The day was full of creativity, teamwork, and inspiring ideas — who knows, we might have some future car designers in the making!

A big thank you to Nissan for a brilliant and engaging workshop!

Shark-tastic Learning at West Boldon!

5th June 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

This week, our Afterschool LEGO League Club for Years 1, 2 & 4 at West Boldon Primary had a FIN-tastic opportunity to dive deep into the world of marine life!

We were thrilled to welcome Jillian Morris, the founder of @Sharks4Kids, for an exciting video call where our young ocean explorers learned all about sharks, their importance to the ecosystem, and how we can help protect our oceans.

The knowledge and inspiration from this session are now being brought to life in our LEGO League Submerged challenge—where our teams are designing builds based on what they’ve learned about ocean conservation.

Thank you, Sharks4Kids, for helping our children become ocean advocates—one LEGO brick at a time!

Embracing Kindness and Inclusion: The Exclusion Blanket

16th May 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

Today in assembly, we explored the powerful story The Exclusion Blanket by Sarah Martin-Denham.

We talked about what it means to feel excluded and why it’s so important to ask “What’s happened to you?” instead of “What’s wrong with you?”

Using the idea of an “exclusion blanket”, children reflected on how they can help unwrap feelings of sadness and instead wrap others in kindness, understanding and inclusion.

At West Boldon, we’re proud to be building a school where everyone feels seen, heard and supported.

VE Day 80: A Celebration to Remember

9th May 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

What an incredible day we’ve had at West Boldon Primary, coming together to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day!

Our celebrations began with a special whole-school assembly where pupils learned all about Victory in Europe Day and its importance in marking the end of World War II in Europe. Together, we reflected on the sacrifices made, the resilience of those on the home front, and the joy and relief felt across the nation on that historic day in 1945.

Back in the classrooms, the learning continued in creative and meaningful ways. Children took part in a wide range of engaging activities – from designing their own commemorative bunting and making wartime-inspired crafts, to handling historical sources and writing thoughtful diary entries and reports as if they were children living through that momentous time in history. Their work was not only imaginative but showed a real depth of understanding.

The fun didn’t stop there! We had wartime music playing throughout the day, and the children enjoyed learning some traditional dances – bringing a little of the 1940s. Our school was filled with laughter and music as everyone joined in with the festivities.

Of course, no celebration would be complete without food, and we were treated to a fantastic VE Day-themed picnic lunch, full of delicious treats prepared by our amazing catering team. From traditional sandwiches to beautifully baked cakes, the lunch was a real highlight and a lovely way to bring everyone together.

It’s been a day filled with learning, joy, community spirit, and heartfelt remembrance. A huge thank you to all the staff, pupils, and families who helped make today so special.

Happy VE Day from all of us at West Boldon Primary!

Fascinating Fossils in Year 1/2

7th May 2025Fiona Goodwin

Last week, we had an amazing visit from Ivan at the Education Group who came to talk to us all about fossils!

We explored a fantastic collection and learned how different types of fossils are formed – from imprints to preserved bones and even fossilised poo! The children were completely fascinated and asked so many brilliant questions.

But the highlight of the day had to be our special guest…Bella the Baby Dinosaur! She stomped into our classroom and completely stole the show. The excitement was off the scale!

A huge thank you to Ivan for such an engaging, hands-on session. It’s safe to say we have some future palaeontologists in the making!

Paired Reading

17th March 2025Fiona Goodwin
At West Boldon Primary School, we love fostering a passion for reading across all year groups! Today, our fantastic Year 5 pupils teamed up with our enthusiastic Year 1 and Year 2 children for a heartwarming shared reading session!
It was truly special to see our older pupils guiding, encouraging, and inspiring their younger peers, building confidence and a love for books along the way. From adventurous stories to fun picture books, every page turned was a step towards developing lifelong reading skills!
Moments like these showcase the power of teamwork, mentorship, and community spirit within our school. Well done to all involved—we can’t wait for the next session!

Aurora Borealis Art in Year 1/2

5th February 2025Fiona Goodwin

Class 6 have been diving into the wonders of the Arctic, and this week, we’ve been mesmerised by the beauty of the Aurora Borealis!

In our Art lessons, we’ve been experimenting with pastels and chalks, learning how to smudge and blend colours to recreate the breathtaking Northern Lights. Using different techniques, we’ve captured the swirling, glowing skies that makes this natural phenomenon so magical.

It’s been a fantastic way to combine our Geography and Art skills, and we can’t wait to display our stunning creations!
