VE Day 80: A Celebration to Remember

9th May 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

What an incredible day we’ve had at West Boldon Primary, coming together to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day!

Our celebrations began with a special whole-school assembly where pupils learned all about Victory in Europe Day and its importance in marking the end of World War II in Europe. Together, we reflected on the sacrifices made, the resilience of those on the home front, and the joy and relief felt across the nation on that historic day in 1945.

Back in the classrooms, the learning continued in creative and meaningful ways. Children took part in a wide range of engaging activities – from designing their own commemorative bunting and making wartime-inspired crafts, to handling historical sources and writing thoughtful diary entries and reports as if they were children living through that momentous time in history. Their work was not only imaginative but showed a real depth of understanding.

The fun didn’t stop there! We had wartime music playing throughout the day, and the children enjoyed learning some traditional dances – bringing a little of the 1940s. Our school was filled with laughter and music as everyone joined in with the festivities.

Of course, no celebration would be complete without food, and we were treated to a fantastic VE Day-themed picnic lunch, full of delicious treats prepared by our amazing catering team. From traditional sandwiches to beautifully baked cakes, the lunch was a real highlight and a lovely way to bring everyone together.

It’s been a day filled with learning, joy, community spirit, and heartfelt remembrance. A huge thank you to all the staff, pupils, and families who helped make today so special.

Happy VE Day from all of us at West Boldon Primary!

Year 3 Greek Day!

7th May 2025Fiona Goodwin

Year 3 wrapped up their Ancient Greek topic with an action packed day of fun and learning!

We kicked things off by sampling a delicious selection of Greek foods – pitta bread, feta cheese, tomatoes in olive oil, hummus, tzatziki, olives, grapes and even some sweet baklava!

After that, we learned all about the legacy of the Ancient Greek Olympics, before heading outside to take part in our own mini games. We competed in running races, long jump and discus – with the winners proudly receiving golden olive crowns just like the ancient Olympians!

To finish the day, we channelled our inner Greek warriors and built our own catapults! Miss Robinson got a bit of a surprise when she walked back in the room – let’s just say our aim was spot on!

What a brilliant way to end our topic – well done, Year 3!

Ancient Greek Day in Year 3 & ARC 2

2nd April 2025Fiona Goodwin

On Wednesday, our Year 3 and ARC 2 pupils stepped back in time for an Ancient Greek adventure!

  • They practiced battle formations like real Greek warriors!
  • Listened to fascinating Greek myths and legends!
  • Tried our hand at writing our names in the Greek alphabet using ink and reed pens!

A fantastic day of history, storytelling, and hands-on learning!

Diving into the world of Ancient Greece

19th March 2025Fiona Goodwin

Year 3 have been diving into the world of Ancient Greek myths!

Yesterday, they explored the famous myth of Medusa and Athena. The children worked in pairs to act out the story – one as Medusa and the other as Athena. Athena started by boasting about her beauty, before casting a curse that transformed Medusa’s hair into snakes!

They then go curious and wrote three questions they’d love to ask either character. To bring the myth to life even more, they took turns hot-seating, stepping into the roles of Medusa and Athena to answer the questions in character.

The children were absolutely fantastic, showing a brilliant understanding of the myth!

That’s All Folks!

22nd September 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 are thoroughly enjoying their new Dimensions topic ‘That’s All Folks!’. They have spent the last week learning about some early types of animation including flipbooks and zoetropes.

Today, they had a go at creating their own stop motion animations in small groups. They learnt that stop motion is a technique whereby a camera takes lots of pictures of an object, moving it slightly each time to give the appearance that it is moving.

They used classroom objects to create their stop motions and get acquainted with the app, as in a few weeks time they’ll be making their own stop motion films with plasticine!

Arts Week 2022

26th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

In school this week we have been celebrating Arts Week alongside the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee! The children have learnt all about Queen Elizabeth II while finessing their artistic skills and talents.

Here’s what each year group has gotten up to…

Year 2

Year 2 were busy making crowns fit for a Queen… or King!

After designing their brief, their first task was to practise stitching buttons and sequins onto a sample material. As you can see, they had lots of fun perfecting their skills for the real thing! Well done Year 2.

 Year 3

In Year 3 the children focussed on Pop Art. The children looked at the Andy Warhol image ‘Reigning Queens’ identifying who the different monarchs were with a focus on Queen Elizabeth. They discussed the different colours used, then they looked at traditional Andy Warhol artwork where the same image is repeated in different colours. On the chromebooks, children were given an image of the queen which they then had to copy, paste and arrange into a 2×2 grid and change the colours.

Year 3 also learned about the Superbloom project where over 20 million seeds from 29 flower species have been planted in the Tower of London moat to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen.

They focussed on the flax flower, the national flower of Northern Ireland. They sketched their own flax flowers following a simple tutorial, then painted their creations using water colours. The results were incredible and it was particularly lovely to see them altogether, and see that every single painting was different!

Year 5

To celebrate the Queen’s 70th jubilee Year 5 were tasked with making a union jack themed bunting for a school display. Using fabric pens, paints and a few British themed templates, each pupil created their own contribution to the Year 5 piece.

Stone Age cave paintings!

17th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 enjoyed a wonderfully arty afternoon yesterday when, as part of their Dimensions topic on the Stone Age, they learnt about cave paintings.

They learnt that in the Stone Age, the people did not write and so drew pictures to communicate ideas and stories. They then each drew their own cave painting on the cave walls (overturned tables!).

Their designs were brilliant. Some drew hunter-gatherers hunting for animals to eat, some drew them cooking on the fire, and some drew them celebrating and spending time together.

All of the children had a lot of fun showing off their knowledge of the Stone Age, as well as their artistic skills. They also learned just how tricky it would have been to draw at that angle!

Stone Age settlements

10th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

This half term year 3 will be learning all about The Stone Age.

Today we had an exciting lesson looking back at the different types of houses: Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic. We looked at the unique features, materials and styles of the dwellings. We also discussed the way of life and talked about how it’s developed over the years.

The children had a great time re-creating their own Stone Age house with many of them choosing the Mesolithic style. We think they look great and they had great fun learning about History, which is what it’s all about.

Year 3’s Greek food tasting

6th April 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 had an exciting afternoon trying lots of different Greek foods. As part of our Dimensions topic- Athens v Sparta, we have been learning about Greece. The children have learnt about the history of Greece, food and culture. We thought it was only right to try some of these foods. So we had an enjoyable afternoon trying the different delicacies! We tried: olives, Greek yoghurt, Vine leaves, baklava, feta cheese, pita bread with tzatziki and hummus.

Remembrance Day 2021

12th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson
Children gathering to show their respect at 11am We will remember them...

Whilst we aren’t able to hold full school events inside due to COVID, we were thankfully still able to go outside to recognise Remembrance Day.

We heard the Last Post and stood in silence for two minutes to show our respect.
