Year 5’s Exciting Visit to Nissan and the Future of Eco-Friendly Technology

16th May 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

Last week, our fantastic Year 5 classes embarked on an inspiring educational adventure to Nissan’s state-of-the-art manufacturing plant — and what an unforgettable day it was!

From the moment they arrived, pupils were immersed in the world of cutting-edge car design, robotics, and future technologies. They got a behind-the-scenes look at how vehicles are built, explored the technology behind electric cars, and discovered how automation and smart production methods are shaping the future of the automotive industry.

One of the most exciting parts of the visit was learning how Nissan is leading the way in creating eco-friendly vehicles and sustainable engineering practices. Our students were fascinated by the innovations driving greener transport and took part in thoughtful discussions about electric vehicles, climate change, and reducing carbon emissions – big topics for big thinkers!

The visit didn’t just enrich their understanding of STEM subjects – it also sparked meaningful conversations around green energy and the environment, inspiring many to think about future careers as engineers, designers, or environmental innovators.

A huge thank you to the amazing team at Nissan for the warm welcome and brilliantly organised experience. We’re incredibly proud of our Year 5s for representing West Boldon Primary School with such enthusiasm, curiosity, and outstanding behaviour throughout the day!

Centre for Life – Year 5 Trip

14th November 2024Fiona Goodwin

Year 5 had an absolutely amazing time on their trip to the Centre for Life! From exploring the wonder of the planetarium to getting involved in the hands-on interactive zones, the students were fully immersed in an exciting world of science, space and technology.

The visit was the perfect complement to their current theme ‘Mission Control’, helping to deepen their understanding of the universe and scientific concepts in a fun, engaging environment. They learned so much about space exploration, robotics, and more, all while actively participating in experiments and displays.

This experience really brought their classroom learning to life, sparking curiosity and excitement about STEM subjects!

Building the Greenpower Goblin Car!

12th May 2024Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 5 have thoroughly enjoyed building the goblin car ready to race at Gateshead Stadium.

The Greenpower challenge to build an electric car supports science and design technology curriculum areas.

The children were extremely enthusiastic about the project!

Year 4/5 Science Club

7th July 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Some of the Science club have had a really exciting week looking at fire starting. They now understand the fire triangle (heat, fuel and oxygen) and how if you take one away the fire will go out.

The children practiced using a flint and steel and realised the friction caused a spark (heat) to light the cotton pad. After many goes we all had the hang of it and were rewarded with a campfire to toast marshmallows.

Bridge Blunder!

13th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

The Yeah 4 and 5 STEM club started tonight. The children were tasked with fixing a companies problem with a broken bridge. Each group spent time looking at different bridges and deciding on a shape before creating their own bridge.

We then tested each bridge by placing weights on it until it collapsed: 2 bridges held over 1kg!!!

A great evening had by all! Roaring Rockets next week 🚀

Year 5 trip to the Life Centre

10th December 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

This week Year 5 visited the Centre for Life in Newcastle. They took part in a variety of STEM workshops and activities which tied into their ‘Mission Control’ topic in Dimensions.

The children conducted experiments using robotic arms, freeze dried fruits and astronaut clothing. The Life Centre Staff also pointed out the Mars Rover which featured in their Literacy work earlier in the year.

Later in the day they visited a science light show and the planetarium where they learned about space, space flight and our earth.

Separating mixtures in Year 5

1st December 2020Miss K. Wilkinson
In Science this week, Year 5’s CSI team have been trying to discover what substance was put into Professor Brainstorm’s tea.
Continuing with our topic of properties and changes of materials, we looked at how to separate mixtures using sieving, evaporation, filtration and magnetism processes. The children also established that some changes are reversible and irreversible.
It turned out that someone had put sodium chloride in the professors tea… the investigation is ongoing. Check back next week for any case updates!

Could you be the next CSI investigator?

15th November 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This week Year 5 started their new science topic on Properties and Changes in Materials. Over the next few weeks they will be working on answering the Learning Challenge Question: Could you be the next CSI investigator?

The first lesson involved the children taking on the roles of crime scene investigators and looking at the evidence to identify the top secret project the kidnapped Professor Brainstorm was working on.

They had so much fun!

Life on Mars…

16th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Last week was Space Week. The theme this year was Satellites. In Year 5 we have looked at the uses of manmade satellites and we have also learned about natural satellites such as moons that orbit around planets like Earth.

We then researched and compared the planets and discussed where we could go if we could no longer live on Earth. As a class, we decided on Mars.

Pfizer

14th February 2020R Smith

This week, Year 5 took park in a workshop led by two visitors working for Pfizer. The visitors discussed medicine with the children, including how it is made and tested. Children then developed their own medicine packaging. Throughout the session, children had lots of questions for the visitors and seemed to really enjoy the activities they completed.
