Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) at West Boldon Primary School

At West Boldon, we passionately believe that every child deserves access to high-quality play—every single day. Play is not just a break from learning; it’s a vital part of how children grow, connect, and thrive. That’s why we are a nationally accredited GOLD School as recognised by the OPAL Programme (Outdoor Play and Learning).

What Is OPAL?

OPAL is an award-winning school improvement programme that transforms the way play is delivered in schools. Developed in the UK and now adopted internationally, OPAL is based on the principles of playwork, which recognises play as a fundamental human right and a powerful tool for learning and development.

Children spend up to 20% of their school life in playtime—that’s nearly 1.4 years of their primary education. OPAL helps schools make the most of this time by creating rich, inclusive, and engaging outdoor environments where children can explore, imagine, collaborate, and challenge themselves through play.

The programme supports schools in offering all 16 types of play, from imaginative and creative play to physical, social, and exploratory experiences. It’s not just about swings and slides—it’s about building resilience, empathy, problem-solving skills, and joy.

How OPAL Benefits Our Children

By embedding OPAL into our school culture, we have seen exciting changes that directly benefit our pupils:

  • Improved Wellbeing: Children are happier, more relaxed, and more excited about coming to school.
  • Better Behaviour: Schools using OPAL report up to 90% fewer playtime incidents and a significant drop in behaviour-related interventions.
  • Enhanced Learning: With fewer disputes and more settled children after play, teachers gain up to 30 extra hours of teaching time per year.
  • Physical Health: Outdoor play keeps children active, helping to combat rising levels of childhood obesity and sedentary behaviour.
  • Social Development: Children learn to negotiate, cooperate, and build friendships in a natural, unstructured setting.

Play Ambassadors

To make playtimes even more special, each class from Year 2 upwards (including ARC2), has its very own Play Ambassador. These children act as role models and leaders during play. They help organise and lead games, support others in joining in, and take responsibility for looking after our play equipment. By taking on this important role, Play Ambassadors develop leadership and teamwork skills, while making sure that playtimes are positive and inclusive for everyone.

What’s Happening at West Boldon?

We currently have a number of open play zones, each designed to offer fresh opportunities for exploration and fun. From mud kitchens and den-building areas to creative zones and loose parts play, our outdoor spaces are evolving into vibrant hubs of activity and imagination.

We’re committed to making playtime a highlight of every child’s day—and we’ll keep updating this page with our progress, new features, and exciting developments. Please also see the below video of some of our children enjoying Opal Play.
