The ‘Big Ideas’ of ‘Learning Means the World’
In line with the centrally prescribed National Curriculum aims, the ‘big ideas’ ensure pupils gain a real appreciation of human creativity and achievement.
Route 1 – Leadership
There are four strands within the Leadership Route, which are as follows:-
- Monarchy
- Pioneers
- Leaders of Societal Change
- National leaders, Empires and Dynasties
Route 2 – Discovery
There are three strands within the Discovery Route, which are as follows:-
- Inventions and Developments
- Exploration
- Disciplinary Discoveries
The ‘big ideas’, as well as the 4Cs – Communication, Conflict, Culture and Conservation – provide the framework for learning to grow and develop. These strong threads help to develop the curriculum sequence diagonally, as well as horizontally and vertically.
End Goals
By the end of their school journey, pupils will have gained a comprehensive understanding of several key concepts:
-
Conflict: Pupils will be able to define conflict, understand its causes, and provide examples from local, national, and global contexts. They will also learn how to handle disagreements constructively and resolve differences peacefully.
-
Communication: Pupils will be able to communicate effectively, building positive relationships through listening, speaking confidently, and sharing ideas. They will understand the history of communication and learn how to communicate assertively, respecting others to avoid conflict.
-
Culture: Pupils will be able to define culture, identify its characteristics, and appreciate the importance of cultural diversity. They will explore different cultures, understand their similarities and differences, and recognize how culture influences behavior and perceptions.
-
Conservation: Pupils will understand the importance of conservation, focusing on biodiversity and sustainability. They will learn about natural resources and renewable energy, and understand how they can contribute to reducing their carbon footprint and living in an environmentally responsible way.
