Newest OPAL addition!

28th November 2024Fiona Goodwin

Playtime at West Boldon Primary is better than ever!

We are so excited about our newest OPAL addition; large play barrels! These have quickly become a huge hit with the children, sparking endless creativity and teamwork.

This week, the children got together to transform the barrels into a giant tunnel, and it’s been incredible to see all the imaginative ways they’ve been using it! From balancing and climbing to crawling and negotiating turns, it’s been wonderful to watch children of all ages playing together and developing essential skills along the way.

And guess what? Even our amazing OPAL staff couldn’t resist joining in the fun! Seeing them get stuck into the action has made playtime even more special.

At West Boldon, we believe in the power of outdoor play to bring creativity, joy, and collaboration to life Thank you to everyone who helps make moments like these possible.

What will the children come up with next? We can’t wait to find out!

Pantomime Time!

21st November 2024Fiona Goodwin

What a magical morning at West Boldon Primary! Today, the whole school was treated to an in-school pantomime of Aladdin – and it was simply phenomenal!

The children were captivated by the performances, laughing, singing and joining in with the fun. Even some of our teachers couldn’t resist getting up to dance – who knew we had such movers in the staffroom?

This has truly set the tone for the festive season – Christmas has officially begun at West Boldon! Thank you to the amazing cast for bringing the magic of panto to us.

Messy with Maps in Class 5!

21st November 2024Fiona Goodwin

As part of their ‘Never Eat Shredded Wheat’ geography unit, Class 5 got hands-on and creative! After exploring aerial view maps of our local area, they used concrete resources to build their own messy maps, bringing the landscape to life.

To deepen their learning, they created detailed keys to highlight both human and physical features, sharpening their mapping skills while discovering more about their surroundings. Learning geography has never been this much fun!

21st November 2024Fiona Goodwin

What a fantastic week in Arc 2!

We’ve been so busy with exciting activities and learning adventures.

Maths – We’re loving our maths lessons! This week, we’ve been comparing numbers, exploring number bonds and adding/subtracting 1, 10 and 100.

Literacy – We wrapped up our mini Bonfire Night unit by writing beautiful descriptions of fireworks displays. Plus, we’ve been working hard on phonics and spelling!

Forest School – Back to nature! We made clay people and animals and even had our first fire of the year – such a magical experience.

Provision – Creativity is everywhere in Arc 2! From block building to playdough creations and artistic masterpieces in the creative area, there’s been so much making and building happening.

Here’s not another brilliant week ahead!

Anti-Bullying Week 2024

21st November 2024Fiona Goodwin

This week, we proudly celebrated Anti-Bullying Week 2024 with the inspiring theme of ‘Showing Acts of Kindness Every Day’. Our children wholeheartedly embraced this message, voting to make kindness the heart of our efforts – and we couldn’t be prouder of their dedication!

Highlights of the Week:

  • Team Communicators led the way, recognising and celebrating acts of kindness across the school. They awarded certificates to children who went above and beyond to show thoughtfulness and care, spreading positivity throughout our community.
  • To conclude the week, the Team Communicators shared a special gesture with every child – a heartfelt note of thanks for their kindness. These meaningful tokens reminded us all of the power of small acts to make a big difference.

A huge well done to everyone at West Boldon Primary School! This week, you demonstrated how kindness can help create a culture of care, empathy, and inclusion, showing the world what it means to build a bully-free community.

Let’s continue to carry this message forward, every day!

Science in action with Year 3!

21st November 2024Fiona Goodwin

This week, our Year 3 students became mini scientists as they completed a fascinating investigation all about forces and friction. They used a toy car, a length of drain pipe, a measuring tape, and a chair to create a ramp and tested different surfaces to see which one would allow the car to travel the furthest. With each test, they observed how friction impacted the car’s movements,  learning which surfaces slowed the car down and which ones helped it zoom along!

Throughout the investigation, the children worked together taking turns to set up the equipment and measure distances with precision. They demonstrated fantastic teamwork and problem-solving skills – and had a lot of fun along the way! This hands-on experiment not only brought science to life but also helped them understand key concepts about friction and motion.

A huge well done to Year 3 for their enthusiasm and dedication! We can’t wait to see what they’ll investigate next!

OPAL Lunchtimes Update!

14th November 2024Fiona Goodwin

Lunchtimes at West Boldon Primary have never been more exciting thanks to OPAL play! We’ve seen such incredible creativity, teamwork, and joy as the children dive into activities that bring learning and play together.

One of the most popular areas has been the den-building zone, where students can gather materials, share ideas and work together to create their own little hideaways. From imaginative forts to cozy spaces, it’s wonderful to watch friendships deepen and see how proud they are of what they’ve built.

These moments not only make lunchtimes fun but also support important skills like problem solving, cooperation and resilience. A big thank you to everyone who has helped make this possible – seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter from our playground is priceless!

Class 8 – Magic Carpet Tours!

14th November 2024Fiona Goodwin

Class 8 are taking off on a new adventure with ‘Magic Carpet Tours’! This week, we used the Flyover feature on Google Maps to soar above London in 3D, getting a bird’s-eye view of iconic landmarks. The children explored each site in detail and picked their favourites to feature in their upcoming persuasive travel leaflet.

Bringing ICT into Literacy made this experience even more magical – and the excitement was contagious! Stay tuned for some travel inspiration from our young tour guides.
