Autumn 2 – Jack and the Beanstalk

17th November 2019R Smith

This term Reception will be studying the story Jack and the Beanstalk.

We will learn to tell a simplified version of the story in out Talk for Writing sessions, we will create our own actions and draw story maps.

As we become more familiar with the story, we will begin to think about the characters in the story.  We will recreate the story in our small world area, on our stage and no doubt will build some fabulous castles using our wooden blocks and loose parts.

The Little Red Hen

16th November 2019R Smith

We enjoyed story mapping and performing the story “The Little Red Hen”

As part of our work we followed some instructions to make bread.

The children measured out and mixed the ingredients, before leaving the dough to rise.

The children must be master bakers in training as the cooked bread was so soft and fluffy.

We all enjoyed dour ‘school-cooked’ bread rolls with some butter and a smidge of jam!

Dear Zoo

15th November 2019R Smith

Our first Talk for writing story was Dear Zoo.  The children were introduced to the skill of story mapping and using actions to help recall and retell the story.

After creating our own signs and using some Makaton signing to learn the story as a class, the children were confident enough to perform the story on the stage.

We then began exploring the innovation stage, where we change and adapt the story.  The children created great new versions with lots of other zoo, farm, wild and domesticated animals.

Remembrance Day

15th November 2019R Smith

Class 1 and Class 2 spent some time this week learning about Remembrance Day.  We started from the question the children had all been asking Why do we wear poppies?

The children discovered that they help us remember the brave soldiers.  We also watched the Cbeebies short film Poppies and found out that poppies appeared in the fields once the fighting ended.

We were very proud of how our children made and wore their own poppies with pride.

Remembrance Day

15th November 2019R Smith

We marked Remembrance Day in school with a special assembly led by Year 5.  The children from Year 5 told the whole school about the importance of Remembrance.

We watched the Cbeebies short film Poppies

We all listened to the sombre music of The Last Post before beginning our two minutes silence.

We ended our assembly with the laying of a wreath by one member of each class.

Will we ever see the water we drink again?

15th November 2019R Smith
This term our geography enquiry question was  ‘Will we ever see the water we drink again?’
As Geographers, we discovered where water sources are in our local environment by using ordnance surveys. We learnt about the relevance and importance of the water cycle and how all the water in our world in continuously recycled. We investigated climates around the world and used maps and atlases to identify key features. Finally, we explained how human activity has caused our environment to change by looking at the preferable use of renewable energy, such as hydro power.
Within this topic, we set the children a homework task to complete a water project. The children created all sorts of wonderful creations to express some of the aspects they had learned. We had power points, posters, books and creative models. We invited our parents and carers into school where the children shared their fantastic masterpieces.

Bring It On!

15th November 2019R Smith

In October, 15 keen scientists from Year 6 returned to the fabulous Bring It On Engineering and STEM event at the Beacon of Light. The children were engaged all day and took part in numerous experiments and tasks from the many different companies that were there. West Boldon children were often the leaders of the mini competitions set by the organisations present. Hopefully, this event has inspired these young scientists and made them think of a career in STEM related vocations.

Be Safe Project

15th November 2019R Smith

On Thursday 7th November Dave Burn from the Be Safe project spoke to year 6 about Keeping Safe – stranger danger, staying safe on the streets and making choices.

We talked about making the right choices, such as privacy, knowing who we should and shouldn’t talk to and the information we should or shouldn’t share, keeping safe on the internet and what we should do if we find ourselves in a difficult situation.
