Year 2 Autumn 1 Focus Text

Children in Year 2 will be looking at the text ‘Wild’ by Emily Hughes.

A little wide eyed girl stares out from the cover of this beautiful picture book. The child found in the jungle is taught to talk by the birds, eat by the bears and play by foxes and she is ‘wild’.

Then she meets the humans…

Over the next half term, children in Year 2 will be making exciting predictions about who the girl is, writing a letter of persuasion and talking about the beautiful setting of the story.

Learning about synonyms

Year 2 have been reading the story ‘Wild’ and tracking the main characters feelings throughout the text. We learnt the valuable skill of how to use a thesaurus to find better alternatives for words such as ‘happy’ or ‘sad’. We will be trying to use some of the interesting words we found this week when we write a diary in role as the little girl.

Wild!

Year 2 have been reading ‘Wild’ by Emily Hughes about a little girl who lives in the forest with the animals. We visited West Boldon Lodge to experience a woodland setting for ourselves. Whilst there we learnt about nocturnal woodland animals and their habitats, and we made dens for hedgehogs! We also made our own hedgehogs using clay, pine cones, sticks and other natural materials. We were able to hunt for minibeasts and think about where in the woods we would find them. Year 2 had a great day exploring in the fresh air!

Year Two Spring Term Focus Text

We have just started out Literacy topic using the book Wild.
We are linking to closely to another book called “The fox and the star”.
The children will be focusing on characters and how they can live in different settings that can sometimes be unusual. This will link to our science topic plants. We will focus on the main character from the book Wild and created our own representation of her. We will think  about what type of character she may be based upon only her appearance.

Non-Chronogical Reports

Year 2 are currently preparing to write non chronological reports in literacy about Robins. We have been using the ipads and information sheets to find out all about the appearance, diet, habitat and behaviour of Robins. We used the RSPB website to support our research and found out lots of interesting facts. We have been learning to use the conjunctions ‘if’ and ‘when’ in our sentences, using different sentence openers and writing questions such as “Did you know Robins use the stars to help them navigate?”. Well done year 2!
