World Book Day 2026!

7th March 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

What an incredible day we’ve had celebrating World Book Day at West Boldon Primary! Our school has been filled with amazing characters from the wonderful world of books, and we have been blown away by the creativity and effort that has gone into the costumes. The children – and staff! – all look absolutely fantastic. From classic storybook characters to modern favourites, it has truly brought our love of reading to life across the school.

As part of today’s fantastic World Book Day celebrations, Mandy and her amazing catering team also created a truly magical Alice in Wonderland-themed lunch for all of our children! The dining hall was transformed into a wonderful Wonderland feast, and the food looked absolutely unbelievable. From the creative presentation to the delicious treats on offer, it was a lunchtime our children will definitely remember!

In the afternoon, celebrations moved outdoors to our fantastic fire pit area, where the children enjoyed a truly special reading experience. Wrapped up in the fresh air, they toasted marshmallows over the fire while chatting with friends about their favourite stories and characters.

The children also had the chance to relax with a delicious hot chocolate while spending time reading their books together — the perfect way to celebrate a day dedicated to the joy of reading.

Days like today are a brilliant reminder of just how important reading is. Reading opens the door to imagination, builds vocabulary, develops creativity and allows children to explore new worlds, ideas and adventures. Encouraging a love of books at a young age helps set children up with skills that will benefit them for life.

A huge well done to everyone for making such a fantastic effort today, and thank you to our families for helping create such brilliant costumes. We hope today inspires even more children to pick up a book and discover their next great story!

Physical Friday Fun in Year 1/2!

25th January 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

We love Physical Fridays in Year 1/2! These sessions help us develop both fine and gross motor skills, which are so important for confident writing, maths and everyday learning.

Through fun, hands-on activities such as threading, playdough, peg challenges, phonics snakes and ladders, building number lines and picking up small objects, the children strengthen their hands and fingers while also building coordination, control, focus and teamwork

All of this supports better pencil control, clearer letter formation and growing confidence in writing – and best of all, the children are fully engaged, learning through movement, play and fun… just the way we like it!

Paired Reading Fun

27th November 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

Our Year 5s, 2s, and 1s spent a wonderful afternoon in paired reading. The younger students chose their favourite books and their older buddies read to them — smiles all around!

Extra lovely to see some sibling pairings too!

Winter Wonderland Walk

27th November 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

Yesterday our Year 1/2 children wrapped up warm and headed out for a snowy winter walk around West Boldon Primary!

We explored our school grounds just like the fox in Coming Home by Michael Morpurgo, using our five senses to notice all the magical wintery details that will help us with our setting descriptions next week.

  • What did we see?
  • What could we hear?
  • What did the snow feel like?
  • What smells told us winter was here?
  • And even—what did the cold taste like?

The children gathered brilliant ideas ready to bring their writing to life. We can’t wait to start creating our own snowy scenes!

Ice Cream Van visits KS1

10th July 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

What a well-deserved treat for our amazing Key Stage 1 children!

As a reward for all their hard work in phonics lessons this year — and their brilliant efforts in the phonics screening check — the children were surprised with a visit from the ice cream van!

The excitement was contagious as they spotted it pulling into school! Everyone enjoyed a delicious Mr Whippy while sitting on the grass, chatting and laughing with friends in the sunshine.

Well done, Key Stage 1 — we’re so proud of you!

World Book Day 2024

7th March 2024Miss K. Wilkinson

We love reading at West Boldon Primary so we especially love world book day! The children (and staff) looked fabulous in their outfits and had a lovely day after Miss Ingoe’s class lead an assembly based on reading. We can’t wait for next year.

Draw along with Axel Scheffler

1st March 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

Today as part of World Book Day we joined a crowdcast with author Julia Donaldson and author/illustrator Axel Scheffler. We enjoyed listening to stories read by both authors and then we joined in with a draw along with Axel. I’m sure you will agree we have some amazing potential illustrators of the future.

Year 1 are starting their preparations for the Phonics Screening in the summer term by working with their friends to practise reading real and alien words. The children love pretending to be teacher and helping their friend to read.

Portraying emotions through dance

19th October 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 4 have been exploring how to portray emotions through dance to music today. We talked about how our bodies might move to music that makes us feel sad, happy, angry and scared. We applied our new knowledge from our music lessons as we listened and talked about the tempo and dynamics. We then created a partner dance to show the emotions and tell the story of when Red Riding Hood met the Wolf at Grandmas. The children created some amazing dances!

Year 1 at Seven Stories

28th September 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 1 have been learning about fairy tales as part of our Dimensions topic, Happily Ever After.

We had a fabulous time hunting for the missing nursery rhymes at Seven Stories, Newcastle. The children were captivated by Lawrence’s storytelling and so enthusiastic to complete the challenge set by the Crooked Man!
