Spooky Day 2021!

4th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson
Spooky Day

On Monday 1st November, children were invited to come into school in their Halloween costumes for a fun-filled day of spooky activities! Here are some things that some of us got up to…

Year 1

Year 1 made some magic potions. First of all they found their own wands and then they gathered some disgusting potion ingredients from the allotment – eyeballs, wing of fly, teachers fingers and so many more.

Year 2

Year 2 looked AMAZING in their spooky costumes! Here they are pulling their scariest faces!

Year 3 in their spooky costumes

Year 3

Year 3 wrote some spooky poems linked to Halloween in literacy. Don’t they look fabulous in their costumes!

Year 4

Year 4 did some spooky writing to celebrate spooky day. They described a haunted house by torch light whilst listening to creepy music. They also made ghost lollies and spell books.

Samba drumming in Class 7!

4th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 7 enjoyed their first drumming lesson of the year today with Mr Bird.

They found out that samba drumming originated in Brazil. They then learned names of all the Samba drums and percussion instruments (from left to right) agogo bells, tamborims, surdos, the repinique and the caixa.

Finally, Mr Bird split the class into two groups and the children had a go at repeating a rhythm altogether as a band on the samba drums.

What is gravity?

4th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

As part of Year 3’s Dimensions topic, ‘May the Force be With You’, they have been investigating the force, gravity.

They used tennis balls and examined what happened when they threw the ball upwards in the air, they noticed that gravity pulled it straight back down again.

Learning about poetry

2nd November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

This half term Year 3 will be reading George’s Marvellous Medicine in Literacy. Over the next couple of weeks we will be looking at different types of poetry and writing our own.

Today we discussed different types of poetry (who knew there are so many!), looked at the different features and decided our favourites.
We worked as a class to read the poetry features and match it with the correct poem.

May the Force be With You

2nd November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson
This week Year 3 have started their new Dimensions topic, May the Force be With You, a three week science based unit on forces and magnets.
So far we have learnt about different types of force (push, pull and friction)
We made predictions about how far the toy car would travel depending on the different surface (carpet, field, hall floor and the playground). We had to think carefully about the surface and it’s material. We linked maths into our learning by using a tape measure, making sure to use cm and starting at 0.
We then had great discussions about friction and whether a surface had more or less friction, did this impact how far the toy car travelled. We had to test each surface three times to have a fair comparison.

Year 3 mini teachers

21st October 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

The children in Year 3 have had fun this week taking on the role of the teacher.

They had to plan a lesson in pairs, thinking about what they wanted to teach, resources needed and behaviour expectations.

Today they implemented their plans and had 10 minutes to teach a new skill to the class.

We had lessons such as times tables, maths partitioning and drawing. I think we have some future teachers in the making.

Stop-motion animation using plasticine

21st October 2021Miss K. Wilkinson
As part of Year 3’s Dimensions topic, That’s All Folks, the children have been learning about animation through computing, art and history.

They have learnt about different types of animation, how animation started and how it’s developed.

The children have been inspired by our trip to South Shields Museum with Sheila Graber and most recently Wallace and Gromit. They storyboarded and created their own plasticine stop motion using the iPads.

Here are some of our amazing creations!

Year 3 crossing the Amazon

5th October 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 took on their third CoJo mission today focusing on Ed Stafford and his two year trip to the Amazon.

They had to work in groups to cross the river (mats), taking their equipment with them, and getting all of their team members across without falling in.

It was a really tricky task but the children worked so well as a team! Even after the adults began adding in curve balls of things to avoid such as snakes (ropes), crocodiles (large nets), and baby monkeys to save (cuddly toys)!
