School Choir – Dementia Friendly Service

8th January 2025Fiona Goodwin

Our amazing school choir had the privilege of performing at the Dementia Friendly Service held at Sacred Heart Church in Boldon. The children sang so beautifully, and it was pure joy when the audience joined in with a few festive favourites, creating such a warm and heartwarming atmosphere.

The service was led by Rev. Emma, with Fr. Keith offering a special blessing to everyone. The children were absolutely thrilled to receive thoughtful gifts of knitted angels and chocolates, which made the day even more memorable.

A huge thank you to the Nurturing Dementia Management Group for organising this wonderful event and inviting us to be part of such a special occasion. It was an experience we’ll cherish forever!

Rocksteady Concert!

19th December 2024Fiona Goodwin

This morning, our amazing children from Year 1 to Year 6 took the stage and absolutely rocked it! They formed bands, sang their hearts out, and played instruments inspired by their favourite artists. Every performance was fantastic, and we couldn’t be prouder!

Who knows? We may have the next Ed Sheeran or Pink Floyd right here at West Boldon!

If your child would like to join Rocksteady and be part of the next concert at Easter, please let the school office know.

A huge WELL DONE to all our incredible musicians – you smashed it!

Carols around the Christmas Tree!

12th December 2024Fiona Goodwin

What a magical evening, taking our school choir to Carols Around the Tree! This truly marks the start of Christmas! A massive thank you to the Mayor of South Tyneside for joining us and to the amazing West Boldon residents for organising such a fantastic community event. Our choir sang their hearts out and made us all so proud. Nights like these remind us of the power of coming together as a community!

We will rock you!

28th February 2024Miss K. Wilkinson

What a fab morning!

We have had our very own launch event which introduced the children to Rocksteady workshops that will be held in school. Today gave the children a chance to try out the instruments and learn all about being a musician in a band!

Rocksteady is an incredible opportunity for the children to learn to play their favourite songs in their very own band with a choice of drums, keyboards, electric guitar, bass guitar or vocals. Lessons will take place every week during school time.

As well learning new musical skills, lessons also help the children with their confidence, wellbeing, social skills and teamwork. These fun and inclusive lessons are taught by highly trained, professional musicians who know how to inspire a life-long love of music.

At the end of each term each band will perform a concert for the school and their families, so you can see how far they have come!

Inuit Throat Singing

22nd January 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

In our Dimensions theme this term we have been learning about the Arctic. We have been learning about the animals and people who live in the Arctic. We have learnt about the Inuit people; what the eat, wear, where they live and some of their pastimes.

We have learnt that traditionally Inuit women would have “throat singing” competitions to pass the time while the men were away hunting.

Throat singing is a tricky skill of repeating the sound just a second after the other person has made it, while keeping a beat and rhythm. The first one to stop for breath or giggle is out.

We had our own “throat singing” competition to see who could keep making noises longest. The children had a great time making some very strange and loud noises and also were amazed when we watched a video of some throat singers and how lovely their music was.

Samba drumming in Class 7!

4th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 7 enjoyed their first drumming lesson of the year today with Mr Bird.

They found out that samba drumming originated in Brazil. They then learned names of all the Samba drums and percussion instruments (from left to right) agogo bells, tamborims, surdos, the repinique and the caixa.

Finally, Mr Bird split the class into two groups and the children had a go at repeating a rhythm altogether as a band on the samba drums.

Little Red Riding Hood Soundscapes

21st October 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Class four have been exploring the sounds they can make using musical instruments. We used the story Little Red Riding Hood to try to create a sound scape to reflect the mood and events in the story. We annotated a story map for our graphic score to help us know when to play our instruments.

Listen to our piece of music and see if you can hear the mood change.

Speed fiends

4th October 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

We have been learning about tempo in music, which is the speed of the music. We played “speed fiends” and had to Copy the tempo created by one of our friends. We also had to move to the speed of different pieces of music.

Keeping the Tempo in Year 4

23rd September 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 have been learning all about tempo. They discussed the meaning of fast and slow before comparing 4 pieces of music and grading them by Tempo.

They listened to a metronome and practiced clapping to the beat. Then played a few rounds of follow the leader with their musical instruments.

They also became composing champions when they chose our own tempo and instruments to create mini pieces of music. They had a great time!
