Year 6 Autumn 2 Focus Text

2nd November 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

After completing our first novel, ‘My Dad’s a Birdman’, Year 6 will be reading ‘The Island’ by Armin Greder.

This is a powerful graphic novel for all ages about how human beings respond to outsiders. When the people of the Island discover a man and a tattered raft on their beach, they are reluctant to take him in. He doesn’t look like them. But they cannot send him back to the sea where he will surely perish. Instead, they put him aside but even that doesn’t solve their problem.

From this we will complete reading journal sessions where we will delve deeper into the meanings behind the book, improve our comprehension skills and look at the vocabulary. We will write a debate during our literacy lessons.

For a critical review on ‘The Island’ watch the video below.

28th February 2020R Smith

In year 6, we have been reading ‘I was there… Titanic’ by Margi McAllister. We have been exploring the two main characters in the story, Daisy and Jimmy. The pair have met on board the ship. Coming from very different backgrounds, we compared the two, looking carefully at their similarities and differences. We transformed our plans into a final write up! What do we think it was like to board the Titanic?

10th February 2020R Smith

We have started our new novel – ‘I was there …Titanic’ which explores a young third class passenger travelling on board Titanic. We wrote setting descriptions, imagining we were Daisy boarding Titanic at Southampton dock, using our senses, to soak in the atmosphere and describe her new surroundings.

Buddy Reading

3rd November 2019R Smith

Each Friday afternoon the whole school stops working and enjoys half an hour of buddy reading.  Each infant class is paired with a junior class and they visit each other to read and share books.  This is one of the many things we do to support the children to foster a love of reading.
