Year 6 Autumn 1 Focus Text

23rd September 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This term in Year 6 we are reading a funny class novel called ‘My Dad’s a Birdman‘, written by David Almond. The story is set in the North East of England in Newcastle. The story revolves around a family. The dad has sadly lost his wife and as a result is starting to act a little bit crazy – he wants to be a bird! Lizzie, his loving daughter, and his sister, Auntie Doreen, support him. The city is holding a Human Bird Competition, which of course Dad wants to enter! Will he make it across the Tyne? Who will be there to watch?

We will be writing a range of genres around the text, including:

  • Character description
  • Dialogue between Dad and Lizzie
  • Description
  • Instructions
  • Newspaper report – birdman competition
  • Diary entry

Here is an excerpt from My Dad’s a Birdman, a film by Will Howe:

‘I was there… Titanic’

28th February 2020R Smith

In year 6, we have been reading ‘I was there… Titanic’ by Margi McAllister. We have been exploring the two main characters in the story, Daisy and Jimmy. The pair have met on board the ship. Coming from very different backgrounds, we compared the two, looking carefully at their similarities and differences. We transformed our plans into a final write up! We hope you enjoy reading about the new found friends!

Pfizer visit

14th February 2020R Smith

Pfizer came to run ‘Medicine snd Me‘ workshops with Year 6. We discovered how medicines are made and what is found in a medicine cabinet. We then packaged medicines to distribute around the world. At the end a q&a session enabled us to discover more about the company, medicine design, medicine manufacturing and careers in pharmaceuticals. We also learned from Adele, Kirsten and Sarah that there are many other jobs at Phizer, and not just scientists. Year 6 pupils were inspired by our workshops and hopefully many of our pupils will enter the science and engineering workplace in the future. Thank you Pfizer!

Mental Health Awareness Week

10th February 2020R Smith

Last week was mental health awareness week. In our PSHE sessions, year 6 worked around the main theme of bravery. We thought about brave characters we know and love, such as Cinderella, Jack (from Jack and the Beanstalk), Hansel and Gretel, Peter Pan and Little Red Riding Hood. We discussed how they were brave and how we have also been brave in our own lives too.

We then created our own brave character and wrote why they were brave. Here are two examples –

What do we think it was like to board the Titanic?

10th February 2020R Smith

We have started our new novel – ‘I was there …Titanic’ which explores a young third class passenger travelling on board Titanic. We wrote setting descriptions, imagining we were Daisy boarding Titanic at Southampton dock, using our senses, to soak in the atmosphere and describe her new surroundings.

Learning Challenge – Why should people with a religious faith care about the environment?

7th February 2020R Smith

Year 6 have been learning about our wonderful World during RE lessons by answering the question, ‘Why should people with a religious faith care about the environment?’ We researched the creation stories from Christianity and Hinduism and understood the importance our world is to our lives. We were interested to find out about the Reduce Reuse Recycle campaign and made a logo out of recyclable materials. We watched a short clip showcasing our wonderful world, which made us fully appreciate all the amazing things that we have on our earth. We studied the artist Andy Goldsworthy as his art specialises in using natural materials from our wonderful world. We designed images in his style.

What do the Gospels tell us about the birth of Jesus?

2nd February 2020R Smith
For our Learning Challenge Curriculum, we studied the gospels to find out what they told us about the birth of Jesus. At the end of this topic we designed two Christmas cards from Matthew and Luke’s perspectives. Here are some of our designs:

Friendships and relationships

2nd February 2020R Smith
During our friendships and relationships topic, we created a class charter thinking about how we need to behave towards one another in school. We then wrote a recipe for friendship and recognised why people make assumptions and why we shouldn’t judge people. We looked at compliments and put downs and understood the difference between conflict and resolutions and how friendship can naturally end.
