Stuart from Constain Group came to school to deliver a whole school assembly on civil engineering. The children learned what civil engineering is and how it affects our whole lives, from our sewage system to our buildings and everything in between. In particular, Stuart told us of theTestos roundabout engineering project for the improvement of the A19. Stuart emphasised the importance of maths of science and what career paths are available in civil engineering.
He then showed EYFS and Year 1 some PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) that is used by workers on the site.
During Spring 1 we will be reading ‘Beegu’ by Alexis Deacon as part of our literacy lessons.
Beegu is a lovely story about a small creature who is lost on Earth.
We will use this book to make predictions about what might happen based on what we have read and talk about how the main character is feeling. These activities will enhance our understanding of the story. We will write lists and character descriptions. As part of Talk for Writing we will rewrite our own stories based on Beegu.

Year 1 children are learning about hot and cold places in the world.
We have sorted animals based on their habitats. We can identify animals based on their features and ability to survive in hot and cold climates.
All of the Year One children took part in a tennis tournament this week at Boldon School. The children have worked hard in their tennis lessons over the past four weeks and put all of their new found skill in to practise at the tournament.
Each Friday afternoon the whole school stops working and enjoys half an hour of buddy reading. Each infant class is paired with a junior class and they visit each other to read and share books. This is one of the many things we do to support the children to foster a love of reading.
This half term Year 2 are reading the story ‘Coming Home’ by Michael Morpurgo. It is an exciting adventure story about a brave little robin’s long journey home battling through storms, oceans and terrifying hawk attacks. During the half term we will be writing non chronological reports about robins, diary writing from different characters perspectives and retelling scenes using exciting verbs. In line with Talk for Writing, we will be retelling the story using actions and phrases before innovating the story and changing different elements to create our own narrative.

In Year One this half term we will be studying the story of The Three Little Pigs.
We will learn to retell the whole story by drawing our own story maps and using actions to help us. We will begin to use connecting words in our verbal retelling and then use them in our writing.
We will develop our writing skills by composing our own sentences to create our own retelling. We will create character descriptions so that we can enhance our stories.
