Number Day in Year 1/2

9th February 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

What a fantastic day of learning and fun! The Year 1/2 children took part in a wide range of exciting, hands-on maths activities, exploring numbers through games, problem-solving and teamwork.

There were lots of smiles, brilliant thinking and wonderful enthusiasm as the children worked together to complete challenges and show off their growing confidence with numbers. A great day celebrating that maths can be fun, engaging and for everyone!

Making ‘Robot Monsters’

18th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

In Class 3, we had the challenge of finding all possible combinations of robots, using different heads, bodies and legs. the body parts included length measurements which we have recently covered in maths. We had to make the tallest and shortest robots. We than had to calculate the overall length of the robots.

The children worked systematically and shared their methods with the rest of the class!

Comparing numbers up to 50

29th April 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 4 were challenged to solve a word problem comparing two numbers up to 50 today.

The challenge was to find which of the children had swam the most laps. They used base ten to represent the number of laps, splitting the tens and ones. They discussed with their partners if they should compare the tens or ones numbers. The children also used a number line as another way to compare numbers.

The sheer joy when you solve a maths puzzle! ❤️

Class 4 had the “best fun” (so they told me) in maths today! The BIG triangle puzzle was such a fun way to practise rapid recall of number bonds for 10 and to develop team work and resilience.

Power Maths in Year 1

10th February 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

The children in Class 4 continue to astound with their learning with Power Maths.

Today they were learning how to add two single digits by making ten. Using their manipulatives, they quickly noticed that deconstructing the number sentence to make ten and some more, made adding a breeze.

Number Day 2022!

5th February 2022Miss K. Wilkinson
Number Day 2022

Children at West Boldon Primary have been dressing up for digits this week to raise money for the NSPCC. Here’s what each year group have been getting up to…

Year 1

As part of Digit Day, Year 1 took part in a variety of Maths activities. These included using the Hit the Button game online and also playing our new favourite game, ‘Get out of my house!’, which helped us to practise addition and quick recall of number bonds.

Year 3

Year 3 celebrated number day with a problem solving treasure hunt task. They had to find the pieces of a key which were hidden around the room, the location of each key was only revealed when children solved a maths problem. They had to work in teams to assemble the key.

Then, they took part in some solvemoji problems, before writing some of their own for their friends to solve. Some of them were really tricky!

Year 4

It was great to see the children dressed up today. There was sports shirts, dance tops, year tops, some awesome home made ones and some very clever uses of numbers from movies etc.

With it being digit day we had to get involved with some awesome maths activity. Year 4 took part in a special NSPCC Times Table Rockstars competition (which was available only today on digit day).

We also took on some really difficult solve emoji puzzles. The children worked in pairs and it took some real brain power. They needed to use their logical thinking, their problem solving ability and skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division!!!

Some of them even had a trick element in! Every pair worked so hard and as a class we competed nearly 70 puzzles!
