Unearthing the Past: Life as a Viking at Jarrow Hall

20th May 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

A fantastic day at Jarrow Hall!

We began by learning about Viking beliefs and religion, hearing stories of their gods and how the Norse people explained the world around them. The children then explored runes, discovering that the alphabet was believed to be a gift from Odin. They each chose a rune to “predict” their future — some were delighted with their good fortune, while others were advised to make offerings to the gods, just as the Vikings would have done!

Next, we learnt how archaeologists have uncovered information about Viking life through burial discoveries. The children recreated a Viking burial, working together to honour a fallen leader with offerings and rituals.

We also had the chance to handle replica Viking weapons and armour. The children were amazed by how heavy the equipment was, especially the chainmail shirt! To finish the morning, we recreated a battle between Viking raiders and the Anglo-Saxons.

In the afternoon, we explored the farm and learnt about the animals Vikings kept and the important roles they played in daily life. We then sheltered from the rain in the mead hall, where we discovered how these halls were built and used. Our day ended with a fantastic retelling of the story of Beowulf around a roaring fire.

Healthy Minds – SATs Readiness!

5th May 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

This week, our Year 6 students took part in a Healthy Minds Workshop to prepare for the upcoming exam season. It was a fantastic session focused on understanding exam nerves and building emotional resilience.

They looked at:

  • The Science of Worry: Understanding why we feel anxious during tests.

  • Self-Help Tools: Learning practical grounding techniques to stay calm at their desks.

  • Stay Positive: Shifting focus toward confidence and effort.

With the SATs approaching, these new strategies are a brilliant addition to our students’ toolkits. By learning how to keep their minds healthy and balanced, our children are feeling more prepared, relaxed, and ready to show what they can do.

Bread, Wine, and a Secret Garden

5th May 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

Our Year 5 students took a seat at the table today for a moving and thought-provoking RE workshop: The Last Supper & Jesus’ Arrest.

As we move through the Easter story, we focused on the pivotal events of Maundy Thursday. This session helped the children understand why the Last Supper remains one of the most important moments in the Christian faith and the foundation of Holy Communion.

Key moments from our workshop:

We explored the symbolism of the bread and wine and why Christians continue this tradition today to feel connected to Jesus.

We discussed the washing of the feet and what it means to be a “servant leader” in our own school community.

We transitioned from the fellowship of the meal to the atmosphere of the Garden of Gethsemane, discussing themes of loyalty, betrayal, and courage during Jesus’ arrest.

The maturity shown by Year 5 was incredible. They asked deep questions about friendship, sacrifice, and the difficult choices people face under pressure.

Bringing Easter to life- Palm Branches & Path of Praise!

5th May 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

Our Year 3s stepped back in time for an immersive RE workshop: Hosanna: The Entry to Jerusalem.

To kick off our journey toward Easter, we explored the sights and sounds of the very first Palm Sunday. The classroom was buzzing as we learned about the significance of Jesus entering Jerusalem and why this story is a cornerstone of Christian celebration.

What we explored:

The King on a Donkey: We discussed why Jesus chose a humble donkey instead of a grand horse, and what that tells us about his message of peace.

Shouts of “Hosanna!”: We learned that this word is both a shout of praise and a plea for help.

The Symbolism of Palms: Students looked at palm branches representing the “red carpet” welcome given to Jesus.

It was wonderful to see the children engage with themes of welcome, celebration, and leadership.

Easter Tales: A Journey Through Holy Week

5th May 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

Our KS1 children were filled with wonder as Year 1/2 took part in our Easter Tales workshop with a Storyteller!

This session was a beautiful, simple Easter story, helping our younger learners grasp the “why” behind the bank holiday weekend. Using special artefacts, we explored the key events of Holy Week in a way that truly sparked their imaginations.

The session ended with our pupils showed amazing reflection and curiosity about what hope and new life mean.

Step Back in Time with Classes 5 & 6!

5th May 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

Our Year 1 and 2 pupils had an incredible time this week diving into History and RE during our Venerable Bede Workshop! It was a day filled with imagination, monastic robes, and some very interesting hairstyles.

Highlights from the Day:
Life Before the Monastery: Some of our children stepped into the shoes of young Anglo-Saxons. They explored what life was like for Bede before the age of seven, imagining his world before he began his journey at the monastery.
Monastic Makeovers: Others took on a more solemn role, dressing up as monks in their traditional habits and cowls.
Creative Crafts: The children got hands-on by making their very own miniature monks, complete with authentic outfits and—the star of the show—the iconic tonsure hairdos!

We are so proud of how Classes 5 and 6 engaged with our local history ans current RE topic. The level of curiosity and creativity was truly inspiring!

What’s Next?
The excitement isn’t over yet! We can’t wait for Class 7 to have their turn at this exciting workshop next week. Get ready to travel back to the 7th century!

Bringing Easter to Life!

5th May 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

Our Year 6 students took a deep dive into the heart of the Christian faith with our latest RE workshop: The Crucifixion and Resurrection with an RE Storyteller.

Moving beyond the chocolate eggs, our pupils explored the profound significance of the Easter story. Through interactive storytelling, we tackled the big questions:

Good Friday: Why do Christians call such a somber day “Good”? We explored the themes of sacrifice, forgiveness, and the ultimate act of love.

Easter Day: From sorrow to celebration! We discussed the concept of hope and the belief in new life that defines this cornerstone of Christianity.

It was an incredible session filled with thoughtful insights and a deeper understanding of why these days hold such immense importance for Christians around the world.

A huge well done to Year 6 for their curiosity and empathy!

Year 1/2 visit from OpenZone!

25th March 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

Our Year 1/2 classrooms were buzzing with creativity this week as we welcomed the team from Open Zone for a hands-on workshop in the world of digital animation. The children stepped into the roles of directors, animators, and coders, discovering that with a little bit of technology, they can bring almost anything to life!

The session began with the magic of ChatterKids, where the children learned how to give a voice to their favorite teddy bears and drawings. By simply drawing a line for a mouth and recording their own voices, they saw firsthand how digital tools can transform a static image into a talking character.

As their confidence grew, so did their stories. Using Puppet Pals, the children moved into the world of digital puppetry. They experimented with:

  • Narrative Sequencing: Learning how to start, develop, and end a story.
  • Character Interaction: Managing multiple characters on screen at once.
  • Voice Acting: Playing with different tones and speeds to give their puppets personality.

The highlight for many was the introduction to ScratchJr. This wasn’t just about moving pictures; it was the children’s first foray into the world of computational thinking. By snapping together colorful coding blocks, they learned how to “program” their characters to move, jump, and interact.

It was wonderful to see the resilience on display as the children “debugged” their code—figuring out exactly which block was needed to make their character finish a race or perform a dance.

The best part? The creative journey doesn’t have to end at the school gates. The apps used—ChatterKids, Puppet Pals, and ScratchJr—are all free to download on most tablets and iPads.

We encourage you to ask your children to show you what they’ve learned. Whether it’s making a piece of fruit talk or coding a mini-adventure, the skills they practiced today are the building blocks of the digital future.

British Science Week in Year 1/2

20th March 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

This week we have been linking our science learning with our literacy texts “How to Care for Baby Chicks” and “The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck.”

The children explored how birds build and care for their nests. We were very lucky to look closely at a real bird’s nest found in our school grounds, discussing what materials birds might use and why their nests need to be strong and safe.

Using what we had learned, the children worked together to plan and design their own bird nests. They collected natural materials from outside and also used art resources to carefully build a nest that would keep baby chicks safe.

There were some fantastic discussions about:
• which materials would be strongest
• how birds keep their eggs warm
• how to protect a nest from the weather

Tomorrow we will test our nests to see if they can withstand wind and rain — just like a real nest would need to!

The children have shown brilliant teamwork, creativity and scientific thinking. We can’t wait to see which nests survive our weather test!

The Easter Story: Piece by Piece

19th March 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

This week in reception & nursery the children worked together to sequence the Easter story and discuss what happens in church at Easter time. They explored how and why Easter is celebrated and showed great teamwork as they talked through the events and decided on the correct order.
