Autumn leaves

18th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 6 spent a brilliant afternoon investigating why leaves change colour in autumn! We discussed what we knew about autumn and how trees grow via photosynthesis. We found out that chlorophyll makes leaves green and the that the lack of this pigment happens in autumn. Then, we collected loads of different coloured leaves and created natural art. We hope you love our pictures – we are very proud of how they show the beauty of autumn. 🍂🍁

Who first lived in Britain?

16th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This half term in Year 3 we have been learning about the Stone Age, working towards our Learning Challenge question of ‘Who first lived in Britain?’

This week we learned about stone circles such as Stonehenge. We built replicas of Stonehenge out of biscuits, then took photos of them on the iPads and labelled each of the stones using the Seesaw app; the alter stone, the inner horseshoe, the outer circle, the bluestones and the heel stone.

Then we got to eat the biscuits! Yum!

Life on Mars…

16th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Last week was Space Week. The theme this year was Satellites. In Year 5 we have looked at the uses of manmade satellites and we have also learned about natural satellites such as moons that orbit around planets like Earth.

We then researched and compared the planets and discussed where we could go if we could no longer live on Earth. As a class, we decided on Mars.

My life as a water droplet…

16th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 6 have been learning about the Water Cycle. We tried to write a diary as a water droplet using vocabulary related to the topic. I think the children have produced some very imaginative work.

Why are humans not like tigers?

15th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson
In Year 1 this week we have been learning about animals and their different bodies. Our topic is ‘Why are humans not like tigers?’ which deals with Animals including Humans. We had great fun making new animals using the different body parts. We made sure we put them in the right places and we created some weird and wonderful new animals.
Take a look at some of our creations!

Pumpkin Soup!

15th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This week in Reception we have been learning about lists. We began by reading the story ‘Pumpkin Soup’ and even made our own soup! We then made a list of the ingredients that we used, remembering to put each ingredient on a new line and using our phonic knowledge to hear the sounds that we needed to write. So next time we’re feeling hungry, we’ll know what to put in our soup!

Innovating the story of Stone Age Boy

13th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This half term in Year 3 we have been reading the story of Stone Age Boy. We created a story map to help us remember the order of the story, and rewrote the story using this to help us. This week we are moving on to the ‘innovation’ stage, changing one or two key parts of the story to make a new one. Today we used post-it notes to stick over our original story map and changed 3 key elements:

  • the character that Stone Age Boy meets
  • the animal that frightens Stone Age Boy
  • the special place his friend takes him to in the Stone Age

Once we have changed these aspects of the story, we will rewrite it with our innovations.

How can we use nature to make Art?

12th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This week Reception had a Learning Challenge afternoon. It was inspired by the story ‘Leaf Man’ and focused around using natural resources to make art.

The children took part in activities such as creating leaf pictures, dyeing cloth using berries, leaf rubbing and making transient art using things they found outside like sticks, leaves and stones. The children were able to access as many of the activities as they wanted and then we all met back together to share our work and discuss what we had done.

Here are a small group of children dyeing cloth using berries!

‘Wild’ role play in Year 2

12th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 2 are studying the text Wild by Emily Hughes.

Look at how much fun they are having freeze framing. Children were asked to reread part of the story and used a picture as a freeze frame. We asked, what is happening here? How is Wild feeling? What could you say?

Year 2 used their senses to describe the picture.

Excellent role playing to help with retelling the story in more detail!
