What do we know about the Victorians and the way they lived?

11th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

In Year 2, the children are thoroughly enjoying finding out about and singing about The Victorians as part of their History topic. They are working on answering the Learning Challenge question: What do we know about the Victorians and the way they lived?

Take a look at our Victorian children, sitting in straight lines, writing out sums…

Terrific Targets!

11th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

In Class 11, we have been thinking about our personal targets for the rest of the Autumn term, as well as discussing our targets with Mr Wilson for Numeracy and Literacy.

Here is an example of what we have been thinking about and the types of targets we have been set. All our targets are SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-based) and are agreed with the teacher so that we know what we are working towards.

Ask your child about their targets!

How does Usain Bolt move so quickly?

9th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

In Science in Year 3 we are learning about the human body. Our Learning Challenge question is ‘How does Usain Bolt move so quickly?’

As part of this, we all measured and ran 100m across the school field. The fastest 4 times were recorded and compared against Usain Bolt’s world record winning time of 9 seconds.

Over the coming weeks we will discuss what makes him such a fast runner, learning about bones, muscles, food and nutrition. Take a look at some of our fabulous work!

Place Value in Year 4

9th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This week in Year 4 the children have continued to explore place value. Place value is the value of each digit in a number. It is vital to their mathematical development in primary school as it supports their learning in other areas of maths such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

This week the children have learnt how to partition numbers with up to 4 digits to represent numbers up to 10,000 on a number line and to find 1, 10, 100 and 1000 more or less using their knowledge of place value. They have used a variety of methods such as part-part whole models and place value tables supported by concrete materials such as Dienes and place value counters to support their learning.

Year 2 Phonics Screening Check Autumn 2020

8th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson
8th October 2020
Dear Year 2 parents/carers,

The Year 2 children will be completing their Phonics Screening during the week commencing 7th December 2020.

What is the Phonics Screening Test?
The test is a national requirement for pupils in the Summer term of Year 1, which as you know what cut short due to lockdown. The test will be carried out by their class teacher and supported by additional adults.

The children need to read a range of real and nonsense words using the phonics skills they have learnt in school.

How can I support my child?
You could support them at home by practising their weekly spellings and reading at home three times per week as a minimum. You could use the previous versions of the Phonics Screening to show your child the format of the test. They are available on the government website. The guidance for adults is also attached below.

What if my child does not reach the pass mark?
If your child does not pass the Phonics screening, they will resit the test in June. If you have any queries do not hesitate to get in touch

Yours sincerely,
Miss Fraser

NumberBlocks

6th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This week in Maths in Class 1, we have been looking at numbers to 5. We have been forming numbers and representing them using a range of objects. We have been linking this all to NumberBlocks. The children have been building the number block cartoons to match the picture of them and then counting them to make sure they are correct. Here’s a picture of the activity and a picture of our display we have been using to support our maths work.

Marvellous Maths

2nd October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 2 have been busy working with Base Ten to make 2 digit numbers.

In small groups, the children were tasked with asking their friend to represent a number that had so many tens and ones. They used language like ‘greater than, less than and the same as.”

Their partner then had to make suggestions about what that number could and could not be and give reasons for their thinking.

Smart work Year 2!
