Year 5 trip to the Life Centre

10th December 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

This week Year 5 visited the Centre for Life in Newcastle. They took part in a variety of STEM workshops and activities which tied into their ‘Mission Control’ topic in Dimensions.

The children conducted experiments using robotic arms, freeze dried fruits and astronaut clothing. The Life Centre Staff also pointed out the Mars Rover which featured in their Literacy work earlier in the year.

Later in the day they visited a science light show and the planetarium where they learned about space, space flight and our earth.

Question Time with Mrs Garr

9th December 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Last week, Year 4 had a chance to interview Mrs Garr as part of our new topic Cry Freedom.

We wanted to ask her about her job as Head Teacher, how she uses her authority for good and what she does and doesn’t enjoy about her job.

The children (and staff) found out so much information about Mrs Garr and it really helped us understand how some people have jobs or positions that give them authority and power over others.

Christian Advent Calendars in Year 3

8th December 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

This half term in RE, Year 3 have been learning about Advent and have been working towards answering the question “How and why is Advent important to Christians?”

Today they created their own Christian advent calendar using card, glue, colouring pencils and scissors. They coloured in each candle on the Advent Wreath to represent hope, peace, joy and love (remembering that the third candle for joy is pink and not purple), then drew a Christmas picture to be revealed behind each door.

They will then be able to take them home and open each door on each Sunday of Advent as they count down to Christmas!

Arithmetic Investigation

7th December 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 put their mental arithmetic skills to the test today with an NRICH investigation in maths. They had to work in groups to choose a card, solve the calculation, then find the answer on the next card. They were surprised to discover that the cards went round in a loop. They had to be sure to look at the symbols carefully as there was a mix of questions requiring them to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Great investigating Year 3!

How to keep snow!

2nd December 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 1 spent this afternoon exploring how to keep snow!

The children were given a selection of materials to test after collecting snow from the playground.

They made their predictions and checked every ten minutes for changes.

The children were surprised that cotton will turned out to be the best insulator while tin foil was the least effective. Mrs Sloanes was equally shocked. We talked about how the tin foil conducts the heat and so will have sped up the melting process.

What do Christians believe about God?

2nd December 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 1 have been investigating the question “What do Christians believe about God?”

They began by discussing what they thought about this question, they then learnt about the Christian Creation Story, how Christians believe in God the Father and that he looks after and cares for everyone, before finding out about how Christians believe that God made everyone special and that everyone is unique.

We completed the investigation by returning to the original question and reflecting on our learning.

Letters to Santa

2nd December 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 4 have been making Christmas cards and writing letters to Santa.

They have worked very hard on them and they have really shown of their developing skills in scissor control, pencil control, handwriting, grammar and spelling.

I am overwhelmed and fantastically impressed at their work. I am sure Santa will think the same himself when he opens them.

Year 3 trip to OpenZone @ The Word

30th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 travelled to The Word today to visit the staff at OpenZone. They learned the basics of coding using Scratch and made a little Christmas animation. They also used paint to create a Christmas drawing which was then made into their own individual tree decoration.

They were an absolute credit to the school. It was commented upon several times how well mannered they all were and how well behaved. They also produced some AMAZING work. Well done Year 3 😊
