In October, 15 keen scientists from Year 6 returned to the fabulous Bring It On Engineering and STEM event at the Beacon of Light. The children were engaged all day and took part in numerous experiments and tasks from the many different companies that were there. West Boldon children were often the leaders of the mini competitions set by the organisations present. Hopefully, this event has inspired these young scientists and made them think of a career in STEM related vocations.
On Thursday 7th November Dave Burn from the Be Safe project spoke to year 6 about Keeping Safe – stranger danger, staying safe on the streets and making choices.
We talked about making the right choices, such as privacy, knowing who we should and shouldn’t talk to and the information we should or shouldn’t share, keeping safe on the internet and what we should do if we find ourselves in a difficult situation.
After lots of planning, today year 5 (Mr Cairns’ class) started the first stage of their DT project of a Saxon settlement. The children working in pairs to create their own Saxon house. The houses will be placed on a board that the children have designed, to create the full village complete with bonfires, foliage and even animals. What a great start!
Year 3 had a great morning at Boldon Independent Methodist Church this morning with ‘Bibles comes alive.’ The children loved every minute of the stories from the bible coming ‘alive’ through drama.
Year 4 had a great morning learning all about The Bible Comes Alive. The children learnt about Jesus’ life and the story of Jesus. This was through different viewpoints from several important people. The children had a great time singing songs and even got to test their knowledge with a quiz!
In year four this week we have been exploring how to find 1,000 more and 1,000 less from a given number.
The children worked together in groups to solve the problems set. They worked through the steps to complete the activity, listening and communication very well.
We asked Brian the caretaker to come into school and talk to the children about the school burglar alarm.
The children prepared questions to ask Brian.
Some of the questions:
- Where is the alarm?
- How does it work?
- What happens if it goes off?
- What noise does it make?
- What happens if there is an intruder?
The children are learning about different religions and how people show care as they understand different religions and have respect for one another.
In our Learning Challenge this term we will be learning the difference between Passover and Lent.
Today we have been learning about Passover which is a Jewish celebration.
The children enjoyed Mazot and juice (wine).
