Class 10’s Rockin’ Science Investigation

14th November 2024Fiona Goodwin
Class 10’s Rockin’ Science Investigation
This week, our budding scientists in Class 10 got hands-on with rocks, investigating their unique properties and characteristics!
Using experiments and observations, they tested durability, buoyancy, and permeability to understand how different types of rocks react under various conditions.
The children were thrilled to see which rocks would sink or float, how much water each type absorbed, and which ones could withstand a durability test.
It was fantastic to see their enthusiasm as they hypothesised, observed, and recorded their results like real scientists!
Projects like these help build critical thinking and a love for discovery, all while making science fun and interactive! Well done, Class 10!

Super Circuits!

22nd May 2024Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 9 worked well together today to build circuits as part of their science learning. They had to ensure they were complete circuits so that the bulb would light up or the sensor would buzz.

Well done Class 9!

Creating circuits in Year 4

20th October 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 10 have begun to explore electricity and were given the challenge ‘light the bulb’. They were given a battery, two wires and a bulb and bulb holder. The children explored the equipment and tried to solve the challenge. We learnt that the circuit had to be complete for the electric current to flow and for the bulb to light.

Year 4/5 Science Club

7th July 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Some of the Science club have had a really exciting week looking at fire starting. They now understand the fire triangle (heat, fuel and oxygen) and how if you take one away the fire will go out.

The children practiced using a flint and steel and realised the friction caused a spark (heat) to light the cotton pad. After many goes we all had the hang of it and were rewarded with a campfire to toast marshmallows.

Bridge Blunder!

13th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

The Yeah 4 and 5 STEM club started tonight. The children were tasked with fixing a companies problem with a broken bridge. Each group spent time looking at different bridges and deciding on a shape before creating their own bridge.

We then tested each bridge by placing weights on it until it collapsed: 2 bridges held over 1kg!!!

A great evening had by all! Roaring Rockets next week 🚀

British Science Week in Year 4

28th March 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 took part in the Outdoor Gym Challenge as part of Science Week. This year the theme is all about growth, we looked at why growth is important to our development and health.

The task was to think about ways to grow physically but to find ways that everyone could enjoy it with an outdoor gym. We tested out exercises that needed NO EQUIPMENT such as squats, planks, sprints and sit ups. The children even created a few exercises of their own. They then created an exercise plan that added up to no more than 10 minutes for another group to complete.

The children in Year 4 loved this activity and when evaluating the task they said, “We were so surprised how many things you could do without equipment.” They also said, “We found it difficult to choose exercises that were right for everyone, not too hard or too easy.”

Rocking their new topic!

7th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 started a new topic about rocks and fossils this week.

We found out about different types of rocks such as metamorphic and sedimentary, we looked at which rocks fall into these categories and then spent time examining and drawing different rocks in detail.

Here we are using our magnifying glasses to look closely at rocks to help us with drawing them. We also tested several rocks (both man made and natural) to see whether they were permeable or impermeable.

Making a light-up town from a shoe box!

2nd November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 have been learning about circuits in Science.

We were set the challenge to create street lights for a dimly lit town.

We worked in groups to make our own little town a within a shoe box and then used circuits to light them up!

Creating simple circuits

4th October 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 10 have explored the equipment needed to name a circuit. We were challenged to make the bulb light up! After some tinkering, we figured out how to create a circuit and light up the bulb. We learnt that a simple circuit is a complete loop.

Investigating the impact of saliva on food

28th May 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 9 took part in the cream cracker challenge this week. We tried to eat 3 crackers in one minute. We had many children very confident that they’d succeed but of course they found it impossible.

The methods ranged from eating little bits, eating more than one, shoving as much as possible in and breaking them but none succeeded.

We then looked at the science involved – saliva, enzymes and their role in the digestive system.
