Commando Joe

Teamwork in Commando Joe’s

21st June 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 worked in groups this week in Commando Joe’s to create the tallest structure they could in the time limit. They had 1 minute to discuss their strategy first, before having 4 minutes to build it. It had to remain free-standing for 10 seconds after the timer ran out. Children showed excellent resilience, teamwork and problem solving! Well done Year 3!

Exploring in darkness!

2nd March 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

This term head 5 are learning about Sir Ranulph Fiennes who is an English explorer who has broken many world records.

Today’s mission-
A route had been made in which the ship had to take to avoid damage or, even worse, drifting into the unknown! As darkness had set in, explorers were unable to see the route ahead, all apart from the ship’s captain. Blindfolds ensured that the sense of sight is lost! Using only verbal instructions, the captain of the ship had to guide their team safely along the safe route.

Mission to the Antarctic!

26th January 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 are enjoying their Commando Joe missions this half term, focusing around the explorer Ernest Shackleton and his expedition to Antarctica aboard Endurance.

Today, they split into 4 teams. Each team was stationed on their ship (a crash mat), and the rest of the hall represented the Southern Ocean. One at a time, a member of each time had to row across the ocean to collect supplies. Yellow items represented first aid supplies and medical kits, blue items represented drinking water, the wooden blocks represented canned and tinned food, green items represented fresh fruit and vegetables, and red items represented entertainment items such as video games/TV/computers etc.

Each team had to think about what they needed for the expedition rather than what would be fun to have, and they had to make sure the items they collected on their ships were organised for the expedition ahead. Teams were then scored on how many items they collected, and points were deducted for items they didn’t need as much.

All of the teams showed great teamwork skills but Emerald house were the winning team with the most items. Diamond house came a close second as they didn’t collect ANY of the less essential items at all! Well done Year 3!

Communication is key!

4th October 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

In Year 1, we’ve been finding teamwork and communication with our friends very tricky. So our Commando Joe mission was adapted this week!

Each team member had to hold on to the rope so that we all had to travel together. Although each team travelled slower through “the woods” to Grandmas house than last time the “Red Riding Hood” teams were much more cohesive and everyone got back safely past the wolves den!

Landing on Mars!

4th October 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Today, Year 5 completed their Commando Joe’s mission 3.

The children landed on Mars, unfortunately during their landing their communication equipment was broken. The children had to build a communication platform inside their safe zone to communicate with Earth. The mission was timed and they had to watch out for incoming asteroids that could destroy their platform. The mission was also made harder, due to the communication breakdown they couldn’t talk to each other. The children reflected on vital skills- team work, resilience and communication.

Rescuing endangered animals!

6th July 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 3 were enlisted to rescue some endangered koala bears stuck up the trees, as part of our Steve Backshall inspired Commando Joe mission. We have been learning about the term ‘endangered’ so knew we needed to think carefully about how best to solve this problem.

As always they worked well as a team, demonstrating great communication skills, resilience and perseverance.

Silent Obstacle Courses in CoJo!

24th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 completed another Commando Joe’s mission today. After dividing into groups and guards, it was vital that the teams worked together in absolute silence or risked being captured.

Adventurers had to complete the course and retrieve their possession, however if a guard heard them and tagged them, they returned to the start and a new adventurer took over.

The children really enjoyed this mission and we learnt some vital skills: resilience, self-awareness, communication and teamwork.

Helping Simba in Commando Joe’s

18th March 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 1 have had an awesome Commando Joe session today. Their missions have recently been based within the story of The Lion King. Today they had to help Simba refill the watering hole after Scar had been defeated and left Pride Rock.

The children were tasked with moving water as quickly and effectively as they could. There were some fantastic ideas how to use the resources to transport the water. Brilliant team work.

Creating a suitable raft for a gorilla

3rd February 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

In Commando Joe, Year 4 are currently completing missions to help rescue a baby gorilla. Today, they had to work in small groups to make a raft to safely transport him over the lake.

They had to think carefully about which recyclable materials would float and which would keep him dry. They designed and built small rafts, and then tested them on water to check if they were suitable for the gorilla.

The children made excellent rafts and each group managed to create a boat which floated and also kept the gorilla dry!
