Commando Joe

Gorillas in the Mist

30th January 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Our new Commando Joe is following the adventures of ‘real life Lara Croft’ Kira Salek.

We started our journey working together to rescue baby gorillas that had been captured.

The children worked in small teams to build something to rescue the gorillas but carefully so they didn’t harm them. They worked well as a team and the children realised that good communication was key to being successful!

Teamwork and communication in Year 1

26th January 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

During our Commando Joe lessons we have been thinking about the Lion King film. Today one of the characters was stranded in unknown territory. It was our job to work as a team to cross the river and rescue our friend without touching the floor!

Some awesome team work and communication skills from Class 3 today 🌟

Helping Simba the lion in Commando Joe’s

21st January 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Our mission in Commando Joe today was to help Simba the lion and his friends save the animals who had been scattered across the African Savannah.

We had to work as a team to get around the course and bring all of the animals back safely.

The children were resilient- not giving up when things went wrong and had innovative ideas how to solve problems.

After the lesson the class agreed that they hadn’t talked to each other enough and set themselves the target of better communication next time.

Fuel for thought

20th January 2022Miss K. Wilkinson
As part of our Year 5 ‘Commando Joe’ weekly sessions Mr Houmark and Mr Wilson’s classes have been exercising their team-working, communication and problem solving skills.
On the morning of Friday 14th, both teams had to work through a scenario where their team vehicle had run out of fuel (water) far from the well. As a team they had to use basic tools and devise a plan to transfer the fuel from the well quicker than their classmates.

Crossing the Tawi River

7th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 continued their journey through India this week, following in the footsteps of adventurer Levison Wood.

Having collected our supplies on previous missions, this week our aim was to cross the Tawi River during flood season.

The children had to get the whole team and their equipment across the hall without touching the floor (the floor represented the fast moving river).

They showed great teamwork and communication skills and some team members showed great leadership and problem solving skills.

Helping Goldilocks cross the river

3rd November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

In our Commando Joe lesson this week our task was to help Goldilocks cross the river. The children are really getting to grips with looking at and pondering the best way to use the materials available. I was very impressed with how they are sharing ideas and listening to their classmates.

The children managed to hit all of the Co-Jo characteristics this week, three of the stand out skills were:
  • Self-awareness – some children were able to say that they weren’t sure they’d be able to balance and asked for help.
  • Empathy – lots of children were keen to stand on the rivers edge to over a helping hand to their friend.
  • Teamwork – the photographs say it all!

Awesome job Class 4!

Year 3 crossing the Amazon

5th October 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 took on their third CoJo mission today focusing on Ed Stafford and his two year trip to the Amazon.

They had to work in groups to cross the river (mats), taking their equipment with them, and getting all of their team members across without falling in.

It was a really tricky task but the children worked so well as a team! Even after the adults began adding in curve balls of things to avoid such as snakes (ropes), crocodiles (large nets), and baby monkeys to save (cuddly toys)!

A rainy afternoon CoJo in Year 2

5th October 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Yet another fantastic afternoon Year 2 have had completing their next Commando Joe mission!

As part of their CJ Pocahontas unit, Classes 5 and 6 have been acting as Native Americans and English Explorers to complete missions and challenges.

This week the poor Native Americans were suffering from a drought (nothing like the weather we’ve had today ☔️) and the English explorers had to work together as a team to help transport water from their extremely hydrated camp to the Native American’s dry and baron camp!

We thoroughly enjoyed this mission and truly put our empathy and communication skills to the test! Well Done Year 2!

Red Riding Hood Commando Joe in Year 1

15th September 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 1 really enjoyed their first Commando Joe lesson of the year. This week the children had to transport the “apples” across the bridge to Little Red Riding Hoods grandmas basket. The children huddled up to share ideas with their team and showed super team work and resilience. 🍎
