Celebrating Diversity Week at West Boldon Primary

29th June 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

This week, West Boldon Primary has been celebrating Diversity Week – a time to recognise and value the many ways in which we are all unique.

As part of our celebrations, we are proud to highlight our achievement of the Rainbow Flag Award, which reflects our ongoing commitment to inclusion and equality. The award shows how we embed respect for all into our curriculum and daily school life, ensuring that every child and family feels welcomed and valued.

Throughout the week, pupils have taken part in activities, lessons, and discussions that celebrate different cultures, families, and identities. From exploring inspiring role models to creative art projects, the children have enjoyed learning about the importance of kindness, respect, and understanding.

By linking our Diversity Week to the Rainbow Flag Award, we show that celebrating difference isn’t just a one-off event – it is a core part of who we are as a school.

At West Boldon Primary, we believe that everyone belongs, and our Diversity Week has been a fantastic reminder of the strength and joy that comes from embracing our differences.

Celebration Assembly 27th June 2025

27th June 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

At West Boldon Primary School, we love recognising the amazing achievements of our pupils—and this week was no exception!

Our Stars of the Week, chosen by their teachers, have been shining brightly through their outstanding behaviour, brilliant effort in class, and kind-hearted support for others. From showing resilience in learning to being wonderful role models, each of these children has made us incredibly proud. Well done to all of you!

A special congratulations goes to our Golden Coin winner this week! This lucky pupil was personally selected by our headteacher, Mrs Garr, for consistently showing our school values. As part of their reward, they got to choose a book from our fabulous book vending machine—a special treat that celebrates a love of reading and a job well done.

We’re so proud of every child who continues to embody our Gold Standard Behaviour and Gold Standard Work. Keep up the fantastic effort, West Boldon!

Embracing Kindness and Inclusion: The Exclusion Blanket

16th May 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

Today in assembly, we explored the powerful story The Exclusion Blanket by Sarah Martin-Denham.

We talked about what it means to feel excluded and why it’s so important to ask “What’s happened to you?” instead of “What’s wrong with you?”

Using the idea of an “exclusion blanket”, children reflected on how they can help unwrap feelings of sadness and instead wrap others in kindness, understanding and inclusion.

At West Boldon, we’re proud to be building a school where everyone feels seen, heard and supported.

West Boldon celebrates British Sign Languge Week

26th March 2025Fiona Goodwin

Last week, the whole school took part in British Sign Language Week, learning about the importance of inclusive communication and the experiences of the deaf community.

As part of this Year 5 took part in a powerful lesson led by Miss Swales and Mr Gordon, delivered entirely in silence – just as it would be for a deaf child.

Without using sound, we quickly realised how challenging it can be to:

  • Convey true meaning without hearing tone or voice.
  • Ask questions clearly when we couldn’t speak.
  • Cope with the frustration of misunderstanding instructions – one child completed their task incorrectly and found it difficult to communicate their confusion.

This experience truly opened our eyes to the daily challenges faced by people who are deaf. British Sign Language Week has helped us all develop a deeper empathy and appreciation for the importance of accessible communication.

ARC Classrooms

5th February 2025Fiona Goodwin

We’re thrilled to share some fantastic news from West Boldon Primary! Our ARC classrooms have now been made permanent following a recent vote by the South Tyneside Cabinet. This vital resource will continue to support countless children in achieving a brilliant education for years to come.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported us on this journey – this is a big step forward for our school community and, most importantly, for the children who will benefit from these incredible opportunities.

Hearts of Kind Words

5th December 2024Fiona Goodwin
The children were inspired by the beautiful peace dove display that was hanging in Durham Cathedral and decided to make Heart Chains with words of Kindness written on each heart. Some of the words written by the children on each heart included:-
Be Kind
Loving
Thoughtful
Caring
Share
Helpful
Smile
Thankful
The hearts are displayed in the school hall to inspire all of the children to spread kindness each day.

Anti-Bullying Week 2024

21st November 2024Fiona Goodwin

This week, we proudly celebrated Anti-Bullying Week 2024 with the inspiring theme of ‘Showing Acts of Kindness Every Day’. Our children wholeheartedly embraced this message, voting to make kindness the heart of our efforts – and we couldn’t be prouder of their dedication!

Highlights of the Week:

  • Team Communicators led the way, recognising and celebrating acts of kindness across the school. They awarded certificates to children who went above and beyond to show thoughtfulness and care, spreading positivity throughout our community.
  • To conclude the week, the Team Communicators shared a special gesture with every child – a heartfelt note of thanks for their kindness. These meaningful tokens reminded us all of the power of small acts to make a big difference.

A huge well done to everyone at West Boldon Primary School! This week, you demonstrated how kindness can help create a culture of care, empathy, and inclusion, showing the world what it means to build a bully-free community.

Let’s continue to carry this message forward, every day!

We have had a lovely day with our ‘star’ of the week assembly celebrating all our stars as well as our fantastic Year 4 dancers who blew everyone away with their performance at the Custom’s House last night. It was also made even brighter by seeing so many children dressing up to celebrate diversity!

PRIDE!

30th June 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

On Rainbow Friday Year 3 discussed the meaning of pride. They thought about times where they have felt proud of themselves or others, and thought about why pride is important to LGBTQ+ people. They also learnt about some of the origins of the rainbow flag, including what each colour represents, before creating their own progress flags out of collage materials.
