Year 3/4’s trip to the Hancock Museum, Newcastle

27th March 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

Today, Years 3 and 4 went on a trip to the Great North Museum (Hancock) in Newcastle to take part in lots of different exciting activities related to animals and their habitats.

First, they completed a workshop called The Wild Escape, where they learned about all of the animals local to our area and the various habitats they live; uplands, lowlands, woodlands, seas and coasts. They had to choose an animal, think about how it had adapted to its environment and then think of how they could use their adaptations to escape!

Then, they were lucky enough to be one of the first school groups to visit MythQuest, which is a new interactive treasure hunt type activity in the museum, where children have to follow the clues, make decisions about what happens in the story, and collect rubbings on the way. All of the children worked so well in their teams and all achieved ‘Hero’ Status!

Finally, they received a lesson on biro art from Jane Lee McCracken which will become part of her online exhibition ‘Where did all the animals go?’

Year 5 trip to the Hancock Museum

10th March 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

On Wednesday the Year 5 children went on a trip the Hancock Museum. They had great fun walking to the metro in the snow and looking around the museum. The children have been learning about the Egyptians so we’re fascinated by all of the artefacts and the real-life mummy.

The Butterfly Lion

7th March 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

As part of World Book Day the Year 5 children were inspired by Michael Morpurgo after watching and learning from him via Zoom. The children then had a go at drawing their own Butterfly Lion. We definitely have some future illustrator’s in our school!

Exploring in darkness!

2nd March 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

This term head 5 are learning about Sir Ranulph Fiennes who is an English explorer who has broken many world records.

Today’s mission-
A route had been made in which the ship had to take to avoid damage or, even worse, drifting into the unknown! As darkness had set in, explorers were unable to see the route ahead, all apart from the ship’s captain. Blindfolds ensured that the sense of sight is lost! Using only verbal instructions, the captain of the ship had to guide their team safely along the safe route.

Mission to the Antarctic!

26th January 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 are enjoying their Commando Joe missions this half term, focusing around the explorer Ernest Shackleton and his expedition to Antarctica aboard Endurance.

Today, they split into 4 teams. Each team was stationed on their ship (a crash mat), and the rest of the hall represented the Southern Ocean. One at a time, a member of each time had to row across the ocean to collect supplies. Yellow items represented first aid supplies and medical kits, blue items represented drinking water, the wooden blocks represented canned and tinned food, green items represented fresh fruit and vegetables, and red items represented entertainment items such as video games/TV/computers etc.

Each team had to think about what they needed for the expedition rather than what would be fun to have, and they had to make sure the items they collected on their ships were organised for the expedition ahead. Teams were then scored on how many items they collected, and points were deducted for items they didn’t need as much.

All of the teams showed great teamwork skills but Emerald house were the winning team with the most items. Diamond house came a close second as they didn’t collect ANY of the less essential items at all! Well done Year 3!

Delightful Dreamcatchers

20th January 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

This week in year 5 the children have learnt about Native American history. They learnt about how and why dreamcatchers were made and then created their own. They had to sketch and plan a design and then follow a set of instructions to weave, tie and knot different wool, beads and feathers onto their dreamcatchers. They all look amazing and unique!

Which material is best to make an umbrella?

19th January 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 1 have been scientists. We investigated the properties of materials to discover which would be best for making umbrellas. We discovered that some materials were waterproof but some were absorbent. We concluded that tinfoil and plastic were waterproof materials but tinfoil would not be strong enough to be an umbrella.

Year 3’s visit from OpenZone

11th January 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 enjoyed a jam-packed day of computing yesterday when Mr Robert from the OpenZone visited to do some fairground-themed coding!

The children worked in pairs to follow the instructions to build the Lego models, then attached the Lego SPIKE hubs, motors, lights and sensors. Finally, they used the iPads to program their models to move. They could make their models spin around, change the speed and direction, some lit up, and some even played music and had sound effects.

Once they all completed the carousel model and were confident using the software, the children moved on to create another. There were Ferris Wheels, ticket machines and swings. The children had a fantastic time and learned a lot about programming at the same time.

Scroll down to see some videos of our work.
