Sketching symbols of freedom

Year 4 have been learning all American slavery in their topic Cry Freedom.

We have studied the way the slaves were treated and how they became slaves. This week we began to look at their journey to freedom.

We had a lovely art lesson looking at sketching symbols of freedom. The children chose up to 3 symbols to represent freedom such as birds flying, chains breaking and following the constellations.

Here are some examples of our work:

Lost and Found

24th January 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

In literacy, this term we are studying the story Lost and Found by Oliver Jeffers.

We explored the beginning of the story through drama – trying to recreate the scenes from the story and contemplate how the characters might be feeling and what they might be thinking.

The children were able to generate some amazing adjectives to describe how the penguin might feel when he was lost.

They were also able to imagine how the boy felt when he opened the door to see a penguin there and what he might have thought.

How does blubber work?

23rd January 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

The children came across the word “blubber”

During our work on Arctic animals we carried out an experiment to see how a seal’s blubber can protect it from the icy Arctic seas.

We first explored how long we could keep our hand in ice cold water – which was not long at all!

Then we used plastic bags to simulate the animal skins and lard to be blubber and tested again how long we could keep our hands in the water.

The children were amazed that they could no longer feel the coldness at all! We found that the icy water didn’t feel quite so cold when our hand was surrounded by a layer of fat.

Fuel for thought

20th January 2022Miss K. Wilkinson
As part of our Year 5 ‘Commando Joe’ weekly sessions Mr Houmark and Mr Wilson’s classes have been exercising their team-working, communication and problem solving skills.
On the morning of Friday 14th, both teams had to work through a scenario where their team vehicle had run out of fuel (water) far from the well. As a team they had to use basic tools and devise a plan to transfer the fuel from the well quicker than their classmates.

African Dance Workshop

13th January 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

KS2 children had a fantastic experience of an African dance workshop on Tuesday. It was a fun, engaging and memorable essential learning experience that allowed the children to have a broad understanding of cultural diversity.

The workshops were delivered by the fantastic Tunde Olasupo, who taught them some of the different traditional African dance moves native to this wonderfully vibrant and diverse culture.

Comparing addition and subtraction facts

13th January 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Some of the children in Class 4 were given a challenge in maths today to compare addition and subtraction facts. Although that was tricky – there was an added level of difficulty, in that the calculations had been completed and the children had to check they were correct and sort them in to true and false.

The children worked so hard to complete this multi step challenge and we’re even confident enough to explain their working out.
Simply amazing – well done everyone!
