Science in action with Year 3!

21st November 2024Fiona Goodwin

This week, our Year 3 students became mini scientists as they completed a fascinating investigation all about forces and friction. They used a toy car, a length of drain pipe, a measuring tape, and a chair to create a ramp and tested different surfaces to see which one would allow the car to travel the furthest. With each test, they observed how friction impacted the car’s movements,  learning which surfaces slowed the car down and which ones helped it zoom along!

Throughout the investigation, the children worked together taking turns to set up the equipment and measure distances with precision. They demonstrated fantastic teamwork and problem-solving skills – and had a lot of fun along the way! This hands-on experiment not only brought science to life but also helped them understand key concepts about friction and motion.

A huge well done to Year 3 for their enthusiasm and dedication! We can’t wait to see what they’ll investigate next!

Class 8 – Magic Carpet Tours!

14th November 2024Fiona Goodwin

Class 8 are taking off on a new adventure with ‘Magic Carpet Tours’! This week, we used the Flyover feature on Google Maps to soar above London in 3D, getting a bird’s-eye view of iconic landmarks. The children explored each site in detail and picked their favourites to feature in their upcoming persuasive travel leaflet.

Bringing ICT into Literacy made this experience even more magical – and the excitement was contagious! Stay tuned for some travel inspiration from our young tour guides.

Centre for Life – Year 5 Trip

14th November 2024Fiona Goodwin

Year 5 had an absolutely amazing time on their trip to the Centre for Life! From exploring the wonder of the planetarium to getting involved in the hands-on interactive zones, the students were fully immersed in an exciting world of science, space and technology.

The visit was the perfect complement to their current theme ‘Mission Control’, helping to deepen their understanding of the universe and scientific concepts in a fun, engaging environment. They learned so much about space exploration, robotics, and more, all while actively participating in experiments and displays.

This experience really brought their classroom learning to life, sparking curiosity and excitement about STEM subjects!

Class 10’s Rockin’ Science Investigation

14th November 2024Fiona Goodwin
Class 10’s Rockin’ Science Investigation
This week, our budding scientists in Class 10 got hands-on with rocks, investigating their unique properties and characteristics!
Using experiments and observations, they tested durability, buoyancy, and permeability to understand how different types of rocks react under various conditions.
The children were thrilled to see which rocks would sink or float, how much water each type absorbed, and which ones could withstand a durability test.
It was fantastic to see their enthusiasm as they hypothesised, observed, and recorded their results like real scientists!
Projects like these help build critical thinking and a love for discovery, all while making science fun and interactive! Well done, Class 10!

Outdoor Maths Fun!

24th October 2024Fiona Goodwin

Today in the outdoor classroom ARC 1 explored numbers in such a creative way. Using chalk and stones the children built part-whole models for numbers up to 10, helping them visualise and understand number relationships. We emphasised the use of mathematical language throughout, reinforcing key concepts. ARC 1 also got to tap into their artistic side, using natural materials from the environment to create beautiful, unique artwork. It was a wonderful blend of nature, learning and creativity, and the students loved it!

Class 10 working at Lightning Speed

7th October 2024Fiona Goodwin

Class Ten, completed their computing work in the current class topic (Lightening Speed) by creating their own representation of how an email travels across the internet. The children were able to explain how computers can be connected together, how routers direct the information to the correct computer and how information – in this instance an email- will be “cut up” put in to separate packets to travel quickly before being reassembled at its destination.
