Year 5 visit to OpenZone

26th September 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

The Year 5’s had an amazing day out on Thursday this week at Open Zone at The Word. They absolutely loved the hands-on activities, which gave them the chance to put their programming skills into action using Micro:bits and Crumbles.

Throughout the day, the children explored how coding can be applied in the real world. With the Micro:bits, they learned how to send and decode secret messages, program mini-games, and design colourful light sequences. Using the Crumble kits, they had the chance to build and control moving models, experimenting with motors, sensors, and LEDs to bring their ideas to life.

The children showed great perseverance as they debugged their programs, tested different solutions, and worked together to solve challenges. They were particularly excited when their code successfully powered up motors or when their light shows dazzled the room!

It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they realised how their classroom learning could be used creatively with real devices. The day was a fantastic celebration of teamwork, problem-solving, and innovation – a brilliant way to bring computing to life!

Year 5’s visit to The Word

Year 5 students had an exciting and educational experience during their visit to The Word in South Shields, where they put their growing programming skills to the test! Using Lego Spike Prime kits, the students took on the challenge of coding dancing robots. By applying their knowledge of block-based coding, they were able to program the robots to perform synchronized movements, bringing their creations to life in a fun and interactive way.

This project allowed the children to showcase their creativity and problem-solving abilities, while also emphasizing the importance of teamwork. It’s amazing to see how confidently they tackled the challenge, demonstrating not only their enthusiasm for STEM but also their ability to turn coding instructions into real-world actions.

This class trip is a great example of how hands-on technology can both engage and educate, making learning fun while helping to build essential skills for the future. Our young coders are already showing incredible potential, and we can’t wait to see where their love for STEM will take them!

Year 5’s visit from Open Zone

28th September 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 5 had a visit from The Word today. They developed their coding skills on Scratch and made a game. They had to choose various sprites ‘characters’ and programmed them to move around. The children worked really hard and I think we have some future coders in the making!
