Year 1 and 1/2 Summer 2 Focus text

Class 3 and 4 will be studying Little Red Riding Hood this term, however the version we are reading is a little different.  The children have already described Red as strong and brave, that she is able to hold it together when the wolf pounces, Red is a modern tenacious little girl who is not going to let the wolf eat her!
We will learn about character descriptions using adjectives, make some of our own treats for grandma (or maybe ourselves!), write recipes, recall the story and discuss its similarities and differences with other versions and create our own alternative versions.

Year 3 Summer 2 Focus text

Leon and the Place Between book cover

This half term Year 3 are going to be reading Leon and the Place Between by Angela McAllister and Grahame Baker-Smith.

Wanting to prove to his brothers and sisters that magic really exists, Leon volunteers to be in Abdul Kazam’s magic show and gets transported to a mysterious world. Filled with rabbits, doves, playing cards and magician’s assistants – among other things – if a magician can make it disappear, it will end up in the Place Between.

The children are already so engaged in this story and can’t wait to read more in our literacy lessons over the coming weeks. Using this book as a focus, we will be working on writing diary entries, descriptions and upleveling our writing ready for Year 4!

Year 5 Cricket Competition

Before half term, 20 children from Year 5 attended a cricket competition at Castle View Academy. The children played well and developed their batting, bowling and fielding skills over the course of the day. All involved had a great time.

Durham County Cricket Club Taster Session

Year 2 have had a Cricket taster session by a visiting coach from Durham County Cricket Club.

He left a flyer about our fun session and information about booking future sessions for families should they wish to further their cricket interest. Good time had by all!

Class 4 play cricket

Today Class 4 had Durham All Stars Cricket club work with them for a short taster session. The coach was super impressed with all of their cricket skills.

A special delivery in Reception…

The reception children received a very special delivery this week.
We are hatching some duckling eggs, we get to care for them for two weeks before rehoming them with a very responsible owner in our local community.

Lockdown Leaders

During the last school closure, 5 children were chosen to be lockdown leaders.

Their task was to keep the children, still at school, fit and active despite the limitations of lockdown. They decided the best way to do this was to organise a series of competitions.

They decided to organise a timed run, an obstacle course and a football skills course for the whole school to complete.

All three events were a great success and the lockdown leaders were awarded £20 worth of gift vouchers each by South Tyneside Sport Network last week. Well done lockdown leaders!
