Comparing addition and subtraction facts

13th January 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Some of the children in Class 4 were given a challenge in maths today to compare addition and subtraction facts. Although that was tricky – there was an added level of difficulty, in that the calculations had been completed and the children had to check they were correct and sort them in to true and false.

The children worked so hard to complete this multi step challenge and we’re even confident enough to explain their working out.
Simply amazing – well done everyone!

Maths Week England

13th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson
Maths Week England

As a school we recognised Maths Week England this week, with each year group completing a different maths challenge. Here are some things we got up to…

Year 1

Class 4 enjoyed our Maths Week Challenge this week. The children had to create three robots and use the vocabulary big, bigger, biggest to describe them. Some of the children extended their own learning by adding the length of the robots legs, body and head together. It was a tricky task to add three numbers together so they chose to use numicon to help them

During maths week Class 3 took on the challenge of seeing how many different ways we could sort the houses. The children were really good at grouping the houses and talking about the similarities and differences. Some children even recorded their findings in a list.

Year 3 and 4

Year 3 and 4 recognised Maths Week by taking part in a Times Table Rockstars Competition. They were able to play for 1 hour a day to earn points. The children loved the competitive element and we have some fantastic mathematicians in Lower Key Stage 2!

At the end of the week, the scores were totalled and below are the leaderboards for the pupil totals (top 10 players) and the class totals. Well done to all of the children who took part!

Year 6

As part of Maths Week England, Year 6 have taken part in fun maths activities all week. We have participated in the daily challenges and worked in groups to solve some ‘magic maths’, where we learnt the magic of number through cards. Great fun was had on Mangahigh as we took part in a live lesson on geometric properties.

Addition on a number line

10th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 4 have been learning how to use the number line in our Power Maths lessons this week. The children are working well with this tool to solve addition problems. That have learnt how to count in to add two parts together and today they learnt how to solve missing number problems.

Neve explained to me “you’ve got to start on the first part count on to the total and then count the jumps. That will tell you the missing number!”
A perfect explanation 👍🏻

Counting in 5s

29th April 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 4 have been exploring counting in multiples this week.  Today we have explored counting in 5’s. Year one children worked together to make groups of 5 and to make their own number lines, while the year 2 children were so confident that they had a go at learning about the 5 times table.

23rd October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This week in Maths we were learning to use number lines. By using physical and visual number lines as well as coloured counters we were able to solve our questions. Well done Year 1!
