Year 3

Year 3 fractions investigation!

10th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

The children worked in small groups to match the equivalent fractions. This was interesting as the fractions were all represented in different ways.

They had to use their knowledge of unit and non-unit fractions to find all the groups, but also explain and justify their choices.

The children identified there were representations of one half, one third, one quarter and three quarters.

After matching in their groups, they then played a card game whereby they had to pick a fraction and gather all the cards that showed that fraction by only giving away one card each.

This really helped to embed the children’s learning of fractions and deepen their understanding and reasoning skills.

Stone Age settlements

10th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

This half term year 3 will be learning all about The Stone Age.

Today we had an exciting lesson looking back at the different types of houses: Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic. We looked at the unique features, materials and styles of the dwellings. We also discussed the way of life and talked about how it’s developed over the years.

The children had a great time re-creating their own Stone Age house with many of them choosing the Mesolithic style. We think they look great and they had great fun learning about History, which is what it’s all about.

Finding fractions of amounts with practical objects

5th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 have been doing lots of work on fractions of an amount and number. We have been making unit and non-unit fractions using place value counters. In groups we had to read the fraction, identify how many equal groups there were and then make the fraction using counters. This also recapped on our prior learning of place value such as ‘exchanging’ to be able to share equally.

Year 3’s Greek food tasting

6th April 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 had an exciting afternoon trying lots of different Greek foods. As part of our Dimensions topic- Athens v Sparta, we have been learning about Greece. The children have learnt about the history of Greece, food and culture. We thought it was only right to try some of these foods. So we had an enjoyable afternoon trying the different delicacies! We tried: olives, Greek yoghurt, Vine leaves, baklava, feta cheese, pita bread with tzatziki and hummus.

Blue and Yellow for Ukraine

25th March 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Today, children were invited to come to school to raise awareness, raise funds and show solidarity with Ukraine. They were able to come to school in non-uniform, wearing something blue, yellow or a combination of the two. We are really proud of how our children embraced this – just look at these lovely photos!

Note to parents: Thank you so much for your donations. We will be collecting again at the KS2 Mother’s Day Assemblies and then we will let you know how much we have raised for the Red Cross Ukraine Appeal.

Investigating Floating and Sinking

10th March 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

This week as part of Year 3’s Dimensions topic, Athens v Sparta, the children have put their science hats on to investigate floating and sinking.

They predicted which materials would float or sink and they discussed how density effects objects. Today they had 3 attempts to make their plasticine ‘boat’ float. The children had lots of fun manipulating the plasticine, problem solving and finally figuring out how to make their boat float by equally distributing the mass into a boat shape.

Wear Red for CHUF Day 28th Feb 2022

1st March 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Heart Month banner

On Monday 28th February, the children of West Boldon Primary School wore red to raise money for local charity CHUF.

CHUF stands for Children’s Heart Unit Fund which is based at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle. The charity supports the children and families who receive treatment at the Freeman and the many other hospitals providing cardiac care for patients throughout the North-East of England. They raise vital funds for pieces of equipment, facilities, aftercare, salaries and research. Freeman Hospital is also one of only two hospitals in the UK performing heart transplants for babies and children.

To raise money, children took part in a cake sale, and a ‘guess the hearts in the jar’ game. Altogether we managed to raise a huge £302.95 – all heading straight to CHUF to make some miracles happen!

Don’t we all look amazing in red!
