Digging deeper in maths

28th February 2020R Smith

This week in number we have begun to learn about the numbers beyond 5.  We are digging deeper when learning about numbers and investigating different ways to make our numbers.

We have stunned our teachers with how we are able to remember and transfer our knowledge of number bonds to 5 to these bigger numbers.  We demonstrated that we have really understood the part-whole method as we were quickly able to see how we could split amounts in to two parts and then recombine to get our total.

Pancake Day

28th February 2020R Smith

This week in Reception we have celebrated Pancake Day by making our very own delicious pancakes.

We first, looked at a recipe to find which ingredients we needed and wrote shopping lists.  We added the toppings we would like to the lists in the hope the teachers might treat us!  Some of us requested whipped cream and strawberries!

On Shrove Tuesday we ordered the instructions and learnt to recite them using actions and sequencing words.

We all worked very sensibly in our cooking teams when making our pancakes.

The most exciting part was when we got to eat our pancakes.  We thought they were yummy, delicious, nice, tasty and scrumptious.

Over the rest of the week we have learnt about how instructions are bossy and have time words.  We have had a go at writing our own instructions.

When we were sure our work was the very best it could be, we submitted them to the BBC’s 500 Words competition. This week we received our certificates!

‘I was there… Titanic’

28th February 2020R Smith

In year 6, we have been reading ‘I was there… Titanic’ by Margi McAllister. We have been exploring the two main characters in the story, Daisy and Jimmy. The pair have met on board the ship. Coming from very different backgrounds, we compared the two, looking carefully at their similarities and differences. We transformed our plans into a final write up! We hope you enjoy reading about the new found friends!

Gardening Club

28th February 2020R Smith
It has been a busy start to our new gardening club.
We have looked around our school environment and worked out what we could do to improve it. We talked about how to improve our school grounds.  Suggestions from the children included putting more bins around school for rubbish, encouraging more wild life and what sort of plants might be needed. We also talked about making things out of recycled objects and keeping the place environmentally friendly.
We did our own litter pick and found some interesting things but also lots of things that were bad for the environment.
We have also recorded the sounds outside and were able to use to listen to what different noises birds make so if we went outside and closed our eyes we could still identify what birds we could hear. We used binoculars to watch for birds around the school.  We did a tally chart and sent off the survey to the RSPB- Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. The children received a certificate for showing interest and helping research in our local environment.
We have been also discussed what plants need to grow and planted cress. The children have been given their cress to take home with them and to look after and care for their plants. Instructions were given in how to care for their cress properly and we will bring the cress back into club next Thursday and judge who has done the best job of looking after their plant.

Learning about synonyms

Year 2 have been reading the story ‘Wild’ and tracking the main characters feelings throughout the text. We learnt the valuable skill of how to use a thesaurus to find better alternatives for words such as ‘happy’ or ‘sad’. We will be trying to use some of the interesting words we found this week when we write a diary in role as the little girl.
