4th December 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

‘TO GIVE, TO HELP, TO BE KIND AND CREATE HAPPINESS’

The Giving Project is in full swing in school this week! Here are some updates:

We’ve had another delivery of beautiful cakes to the local food bank.

Year 2 have painted Christmas tree decorations to give to a friend, and Year 3’s pom pom snowmen are coming along a treat!

Also, some children were kindly helping to decorate our Christmas tree in the school hall. Here are some Reception children hanging their baubles on the tree.

Festive Advent Calendars

4th December 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Today in R.E. Class 7 created their very own Christian Advent calendars. In R.E. lessons this half term we have been working towards answering the question: ‘How and why is Advent important to Christians?’

We discussed the meaning of Advent, and recapped the candles on the Advent wreath. Then the children created their own Advent Calendars for each week of Advent. Inside each door, they drew a picture of something related to Christmas and Christmastime. The end results are beautiful!

A message from Councillor Joanne Bell

3rd December 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Today two of our school governors attended their last meetings at West Boldon Primary School.

Councillor Alison Strike and Councillor Joanne Bell in their roles of chair and vice chair have given over 50 years between them to our fabulous school and we very much appreciate them both. Over the years they have both constantly strived to ensure that your children get the best education we can provide. They will both be a big miss but we know they will always hold a special place in their hearts for our school.

A message from Joanne:

“After more than 30 years on the Governing board at the school I have left today. I would like to say a huge thank you to all the wonderful staff and fantastic children for the beautiful flowers and card I received. It really meant a lot to me and was a big surprise.
I’d like to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Best Wishes for the future

Cllr Joanne Bell”

Marvellous multiples and fabulous factors

1st December 2020Miss K. Wilkinson
In Maths, for the next few weeks, Year 5 are building on our knowledge of multiplication and division. We have been looking at multiples, factors and common factors. Striping back to basics, we have used four gets to create arrays to visualise numbers, which has really helped support our learning.

Separating mixtures in Year 5

1st December 2020Miss K. Wilkinson
In Science this week, Year 5’s CSI team have been trying to discover what substance was put into Professor Brainstorm’s tea.
Continuing with our topic of properties and changes of materials, we looked at how to separate mixtures using sieving, evaporation, filtration and magnetism processes. The children also established that some changes are reversible and irreversible.
It turned out that someone had put sodium chloride in the professors tea… the investigation is ongoing. Check back next week for any case updates!

This week, Class 11 have been learning breakfast nouns in French. They tucked into a continental French breakfast consisting of: crossiants, pain au chocolat, orange juice and apple juice. This was a great experience for the children and they learnt lots of new words as well as the opportunity to practise their manners in French. Magnifique!

Outward Bound In-school Adventure Days

30th November 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 6 had a fantastic couple of days with Outward Bound!  We took part in the following activities:

  • team building games – such as Fishy Fishy Fishy and Capture the Flag
  • Team challenges
  • Map drawing of the school
  • Orienteering course around the school
  • OS map walk in the local area
  • Shelter building
  • Peer leadership challenges
  • Campfire – roasting marshmallows and camp sing-a-long

During our adventure days we improved our team building skills, increased our resilience and determination, boosted our confidence and self-belief, improved our understanding and dealing with challenge and risk and learned new life skills.

A terrific time was had by all!

Reception children are making some beautiful Christmas cards for each resident of The Meadows Care Home.

Year 6 children are enjoying decorating a rainbow for the local church.

Year 4 children are making Christmas tree baubles with a greeting inside to give to their friends at Christmas time.
