Year 6 Autumn 2 Focus Text

2nd November 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

After completing our first novel, ‘My Dad’s a Birdman’, Year 6 will be reading ‘The Island’ by Armin Greder.

This is a powerful graphic novel for all ages about how human beings respond to outsiders. When the people of the Island discover a man and a tattered raft on their beach, they are reluctant to take him in. He doesn’t look like them. But they cannot send him back to the sea where he will surely perish. Instead, they put him aside but even that doesn’t solve their problem.

From this we will complete reading journal sessions where we will delve deeper into the meanings behind the book, improve our comprehension skills and look at the vocabulary. We will write a debate during our literacy lessons.

For a critical review on ‘The Island’ watch the video below.

Year 3 Autumn 2 Focus Text

2nd November 2020Miss K. Wilkinson
During the Autumn 2 half term, Year 3 will be reading ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine‘ by Roald Dahl.
We will be writing our own instructions for our own ‘marvellous’ creations using Roald Dahl style language, before moving on to writing and performing our own poems based on the book.
Watch the book trailer for George’s Marvellous Medicine below:

What can we learn from visiting a Synagogue?

27th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 2 have been finding out about why a Synagogue is a special place for Jews. They learnt about different features found in this place of worship and were able to write sentences to describe how these features were used.

We also found out about Jewish foods eaten during festivals celebrated at the Synagogue.

Eco-Council Design a Mascot Competition!

24th October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

We need your help!

We would like you to make an energy saving or an environment based mascot for West Boldon Primary School, to help encourage the children in our school to look after our planet and save energy. This could be based on energy, recycling or just a general environmental mascot. We would like you to have some fun over the half-term holidays by creating your mascot and giving them a name. You could even create a slogan or a catchphrase for them if you like.

You can use your computer or draw your mascot by hand. Entries should be on a single piece of A4 paper and make sure you fill the page so that we can see them.

There will be prizes for the most creative entries and the winner will also see their mascot around the school to help us all be that little bit more environmentally friendly.

The competition is open to all year groups and it closes on Friday 6th November 2020.

Make sure to give your entries to your class teacher so that they can pass them onto the Eco-council before the deadline.

Here are some examples below to give you some inspiration.

Best of luck,

The Eco-council

Muscles and joints

23rd October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This week in Science we began learning about what makes Usain Bolt so quick as part of our Animals Including Humans topic.

We learned that to run fast we need really strong muscles and to be very physically fit. We discovered that muscles work in pairs to contract and relax, to enable our bodies to move. We also learned about two specific type of joint found in the human body; the ball and socket joint, and the hinge joint.

We then went outside with the iPads and struck a pose, then in small groups we labelled each of the muscles and joints we had used using the Seesaw app.

Take a look at our awesome work below.

Super subtraction!

23rd October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This week in Year 3 we have moved on from Place Value and began our next unit, Addition and Subtraction.

We have looked at patterns in adding multiples of 100; for instance, to solve 300 + 200 we can use 3 + 2 to help us.

We then began looking at adding and subtracting 3-digit numbers and ones. We noticed that when not crossing 10, only the ones digit will change.

This enabled most of us to work out these quite tricky fluency questions in our heads! Look at our fabulous work!

Spooky writing…

23rd October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 9 took part in a spooky writing lesson this week.

We were using the techniques we have practiced in literacy to create a setting description of a haunted mansion. To help our imagination flow we wrote in the DARK using a torch and listened to some creepy music.

We all had a wonderful time and created some impressive writing!

23rd October 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 9 reached 1000 dojo points this week and as a reward we chose a spooky afternoon.

We played Halloween bingo, created art for a drawing competition and played some silly games.

Look at the fun we have had!
