Outward Bound In-school Adventure Days

30th November 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 6 had a fantastic couple of days with Outward Bound!  We took part in the following activities:

  • team building games – such as Fishy Fishy Fishy and Capture the Flag
  • Team challenges
  • Map drawing of the school
  • Orienteering course around the school
  • OS map walk in the local area
  • Shelter building
  • Peer leadership challenges
  • Campfire – roasting marshmallows and camp sing-a-long

During our adventure days we improved our team building skills, increased our resilience and determination, boosted our confidence and self-belief, improved our understanding and dealing with challenge and risk and learned new life skills.

A terrific time was had by all!

The Giving Project Update 27th Nov 2020

27th November 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

‘TO GIVE, TO HELP, TO BE KIND AND CREATE HAPPINESS’

Now our Giving Project is getting underway, here are some updates:

The Year 5 pupils have made some cakes for the local food bank. They attached a lovely note so the recipients knew who they were from.

Here the children are tasting the cakes to make sure they are good enough!

The children enjoyed walking over to the Community Centre to hand deliver their cakes.

Reception children are making some beautiful Christmas cards for each resident of The Meadows Care Home.

Year 6 children are enjoying decorating a rainbow for the local church.

Year 4 children are making Christmas tree baubles with a greeting inside to give to their friends at Christmas time.

Year 3 children are currently making pom pom snowmen to give to their friends at Christmas.

Weʼre also raising £250 to help fund ‘Christmas cheer’ parcels for the elderly residents of West Boldon.

Class 7’s Marvellous Medicines!

26th November 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

Today, Year 3 made their very own ‘marvellous medicines’!

The children followed a set of instructions to make their very own concoctions. They used the ingredients water, mouthwash, glitter, sweets and food colouring, and mixed it all up before putting them in their own little jars.

Have a look at our creations below!

African Art

26th November 2020Miss K. Wilkinson
This half term in Year 2, the children are exploring the rich, vibrant colours and patterns associated with African Art. They will study art throughout native tribes and make and decorate masks and water jars as well as recreate the beautiful African landscapes at sunset.
This week, we are paying close attention to the Maasai culture and their amazing homemade jewellery. Look how intricate  our pattern making is as we build our own collection of African headbands, bracelets and necklaces.

How did the Early Britons make shelters?

25th November 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This half term the children in Year 3 have been answering the learning challenge question: ‘How did the Early Britons make shelters?’ as part of their DT work.

The children designed their own Stone Age shelter; either a Paleolithic cave or a Mesolithic tent-style home. To make their designs come to life, they molded clay and used sticks to hold them in place. Once the clay had dried, the children painted them in the colours they would have been back in the Stone Age.

Take a look at our fabulous Stone Age settlement!

What can rocks tell us about the way the Earth was formed?

25th November 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This week in Science Year 3 have been investigating how rocks change over time as part of their Learning Challenge Question: What can rocks tell us about the way the Earth was formed?

They agreed that rocks don’t change massively to the naked eye, however we know that they must change over time somehow!

We worked in small groups to conduct an experiment. We chose a rock, and placed it inside a jar with 100ml of water. We shook the jar to the count of 100, then filtered out the water through filter paper to see what was left behind.

Once all of the water filtered through we noticed there was some debris left in the filter paper. Some of us said that this looked like sand! It was clear that the rocks knocking together had made small fragments break off.

Super work, Year 3!

21st November 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This week in Year 4 we have been focussing on column subtraction, which can be tricky when you need to exchange numbers. To help us we practiced working out calculations while physically exchanging our counters. It was even better as we were allowed to use the tables as huge whiteboards!
