Class 10 – Lightning Speed Artists

16th October 2024Fiona Goodwin

Class 10 have begun their art lessons from out Lightening Speed topic. Today they were challenged to copy a picture of a flower ten times. The children said this was impossible and they couldn’t make any EXACTLY the same. They then investigated printing to fine it was somewhat more reliable. We will discover who invented the printing press and so revolutionised the spread of the written word in our next lessons.

Romero Britto

7th July 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 have been learning about Brazil in our “Picture our Planet” topic. This week, we have been learning about famous Brazilian neo-pop artist Romero Britto. We have learnt all about how he draws inspiration from cubism and graffiti art. We then practised making collages of his art work using a cutting template. Once we had the hang of it, we used the same cutting template to cut pieces of fabric to create a carnival collage. We worked hard to choose patterns and colours that complimented each other and then added decorations.

Printing patterns in Year 1

9th June 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

The Year One children this term are following a topic theme called “Going Wild”. In art we have had to explore the technique of printing. We found a little out about Andy Warhol, especially his series of work called “endangered species”. We then explored animal patterns and tried sketching out some of our own. We picked our favourite pattern and then transferred it on to styrofoam to make our own printing tile. We finished our work by exploring how to use a brayer and printing ink to create our own printed patterns. The children had a lot of fun and were amazed at their creations.

Arts Week 2023

6th June 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

For Arts Week we have been using the text ‘It’s Up to Us’ as a focus, each year group picking a different element of environmental issues to draw attention to with their artwork. Children in Year 3 sketched polar bears.

First, the sketched them out and coloured them, before painting a background using water colours. Finally, they will draw their polar bears again and cut them out to place on the watercolour background. We can’t wait to see the final results!

Painting the Moon

19th October 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 5 are enjoying their Dimensions topic ‘Mission Control’. Today in Art we looked closely at the different colours and textures of the Moon. We then thought carefully about how to create a realistic version. We think they look great and showed some real artistic skills. We will continue to develop these skills this week.

Block Printing in Year 1

17th July 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

What a fabulous afternoon Class 4 had on Friday!

Following Thursday’s planning and pattern making lesson, the children used their self designed tiles to explore block printing.

The children were amazed at the effects and were really interested in playing with colour and overlaying just like the artist Andy Warhol who we have talked about.

Take a look at their amazing creations!

Arts Week 2022

26th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

In school this week we have been celebrating Arts Week alongside the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee! The children have learnt all about Queen Elizabeth II while finessing their artistic skills and talents.

Here’s what each year group has gotten up to…

Year 2

Year 2 were busy making crowns fit for a Queen… or King!

After designing their brief, their first task was to practise stitching buttons and sequins onto a sample material. As you can see, they had lots of fun perfecting their skills for the real thing! Well done Year 2.

 Year 3

In Year 3 the children focussed on Pop Art. The children looked at the Andy Warhol image ‘Reigning Queens’ identifying who the different monarchs were with a focus on Queen Elizabeth. They discussed the different colours used, then they looked at traditional Andy Warhol artwork where the same image is repeated in different colours. On the chromebooks, children were given an image of the queen which they then had to copy, paste and arrange into a 2×2 grid and change the colours.

Year 3 also learned about the Superbloom project where over 20 million seeds from 29 flower species have been planted in the Tower of London moat to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Her Majesty The Queen.

They focussed on the flax flower, the national flower of Northern Ireland. They sketched their own flax flowers following a simple tutorial, then painted their creations using water colours. The results were incredible and it was particularly lovely to see them altogether, and see that every single painting was different!

Year 5

To celebrate the Queen’s 70th jubilee Year 5 were tasked with making a union jack themed bunting for a school display. Using fabric pens, paints and a few British themed templates, each pupil created their own contribution to the Year 5 piece.

Stone Age cave paintings!

17th May 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 3 enjoyed a wonderfully arty afternoon yesterday when, as part of their Dimensions topic on the Stone Age, they learnt about cave paintings.

They learnt that in the Stone Age, the people did not write and so drew pictures to communicate ideas and stories. They then each drew their own cave painting on the cave walls (overturned tables!).

Their designs were brilliant. Some drew hunter-gatherers hunting for animals to eat, some drew them cooking on the fire, and some drew them celebrating and spending time together.

All of the children had a lot of fun showing off their knowledge of the Stone Age, as well as their artistic skills. They also learned just how tricky it would have been to draw at that angle!
