Creating simple circuits

4th October 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 10 have explored the equipment needed to name a circuit. We were challenged to make the bulb light up! After some tinkering, we figured out how to create a circuit and light up the bulb. We learnt that a simple circuit is a complete loop.

Admission to Secondary School in September 2022

4th October 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

4 October 2021

Dear Parents/Carers of Year 6 Pupils,

Admission to Secondary School in September 2022

May I remind you that the closing date for returning your application form for your child to transfer into Secondary School next year is Monday 1 November 2021 at 4.30pm.

The easiest way to apply for your preferred school(s) is online by logging onto the Council web site at www.southtyneside.gov.uk/schooladmissions.

If you apply online, you will be notified on Tuesday 1 March 2022 our ‘offer day’ via your e-mail account.

Please be reminded that you must make a note of the email address that you use when applying as this will be the email address that will be used to send notification of your school offer.

Parents are also reminded that if they change address following the submission of an application form that they must notify us of this change in writing either by email to [email protected] or by post to the School Admissions Team, Town Hall and Civic Offices, South Shields, NE33 2RL. Change of addresses must reach us by Tuesday 4 January 2022. If you do not provide us with a change of address by this date, your new address will not be taken into account when allocating places.

If you have not applied online, you will receive a letter which is sent in the second class post on offer day.

If you do not have access to a computer you can obtain a hard copy of the application form by contacting the School Admissions Team on telephone numbers 0191 424 7767 or 0191 424 7706.

Failure to return or returning your application form late will reduce the chance of your child gaining a place at your preferred school.

Please be reminded, it is your responsibility to ensure your application form is completed and received by the deadline date of Monday 1 November 2021 at 4.30pm.

This is a generic message to all parents so if you have already applied for your child’s school place please ignore this letter.

Yours sincerely

Christine Henderson

Designing fairy bags in Class 4

1st October 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Class 4 embarked on the design technology project of our Dimensions “happily ever after” theme this week.

We have been asked to design a bag for a fairy. We have completed a needs analysis. Looked at a variety of human sized bags and considered the pros and cons of each style of bag.
Today we shared ideas on how we thought our bags might look and then spent some time designing.
A few of us began making our fairy bags. We’re all looking forward to finishing them and sending them to the fairies in the secret garden.

Year 1 visit to St Nicholas’ Church

1st October 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 1 had a brilliant afternoon at St Nicholas’ Church on Thursday.

The children were excited to spot the spire as we approached the church and simply beside themselves to meet Reverend Paul “from the tele”
Reverend Paul and Emma showed us all around the church and answered all of our questions. The children were full of awe and wonder as they explored the beautiful old church.
We are thankful for Rev Paul and Emma for giving up their time to help us with our RE question this term “What can we learn about Christianity from visiting a church?”

Comparing 3-digit numbers using practical objects

30th September 2021Miss K. Wilkinson
Year 3 love a practical maths lesson!
Today they had to compare objects using our place value knowledge, using concrete objects (base 10).
They identified the numbers, made the numbers, and then formed a number sentence using ‘greater than & less than’. Some of the children even moved on to using inequality symbols.
They were then challenged by answering questions such as ‘What is 1,10 or 100 less or more than’ a given number.

A visit from the police in Year 4

29th September 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 have received a visit from the police this week. They came to talk to them about being safe online as part of their current topic. The children had to guess the age limits on games, they discussed their digital footprint, took part in a quiz and had a chance to ask questions.

Maybe we have a few budding officers of the future in our class!

Pixar VS Dreamworks

28th September 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

As part of our Dimensions topic, “That’s All Folks”, Year 3 are learning about animations.

Using their computing skills they worked in pairs to log onto the chromebooks, open Google Classroom and research films created by Pixar and Dreamworks. The children can now name so many films made by each animation studio! This also gave them lots of ideas for their own animations which they will plan and create later in the topic.

We also discovered the first fully computerised animation – Toy Story (we all love that film).

And… ACTION

25th September 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

On Friday some of our staff and children began using the TV studio equipment we are currently renting from the OpenZone to film our very first Subject Ambassador video!

Over the course of the year, our chosen Subject Ambassadors will work with our Curriculum Lead (Miss Swales), Subject Ambassador Leads (Miss Wilkinson and Miss Ingoe) and resident film expert (Mr Mills) to talk about their chosen subject, their favourite things about the subject, the topics they have covered, and the skills they have learnt during their time at West Boldon.

Here are the Computing Subject Ambassadors having their turn under the spotlight!

Video coming soon…
