British Science Week in Year 4

28th March 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 took part in the Outdoor Gym Challenge as part of Science Week. This year the theme is all about growth, we looked at why growth is important to our development and health.

The task was to think about ways to grow physically but to find ways that everyone could enjoy it with an outdoor gym. We tested out exercises that needed NO EQUIPMENT such as squats, planks, sprints and sit ups. The children even created a few exercises of their own. They then created an exercise plan that added up to no more than 10 minutes for another group to complete.

The children in Year 4 loved this activity and when evaluating the task they said, “We were so surprised how many things you could do without equipment.” They also said, “We found it difficult to choose exercises that were right for everyone, not too hard or too easy.”

Blue and Yellow for Ukraine

25th March 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Today, children were invited to come to school to raise awareness, raise funds and show solidarity with Ukraine. They were able to come to school in non-uniform, wearing something blue, yellow or a combination of the two. We are really proud of how our children embraced this – just look at these lovely photos!

Note to parents: Thank you so much for your donations. We will be collecting again at the KS2 Mother’s Day Assemblies and then we will let you know how much we have raised for the Red Cross Ukraine Appeal.

Helping Simba in Commando Joe’s

18th March 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 1 have had an awesome Commando Joe session today. Their missions have recently been based within the story of The Lion King. Today they had to help Simba refill the watering hole after Scar had been defeated and left Pride Rock.

The children were tasked with moving water as quickly and effectively as they could. There were some fantastic ideas how to use the resources to transport the water. Brilliant team work.

British Science Week 2022

18th March 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 1’s British Science week task took them down to the Secret Garden this afternoon to search for worms. The children were all surprised to learn that there are three kinds of worms and tried hard to identify the ones we found. They used string to measure the worms. Two groups measured the same worm and were astounded to find it had stretched itself from 16 cms to 23 cms!!! The children were also intrigued to watch one wonderful working worm do a poo!

Investigating Floating and Sinking

10th March 2022Miss K. Wilkinson

This week as part of Year 3’s Dimensions topic, Athens v Sparta, the children have put their science hats on to investigate floating and sinking.

They predicted which materials would float or sink and they discussed how density effects objects. Today they had 3 attempts to make their plasticine ‘boat’ float. The children had lots of fun manipulating the plasticine, problem solving and finally figuring out how to make their boat float by equally distributing the mass into a boat shape.
