We are becoming a Unicef UK Rights Respecting School!

10th December 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Rights Respecting School Bronze logo

At West Boldon Primary School, we value the rights of our learners and strive to keep them at the heart of our ethos and culture. To support us in doing this, we successfully applied to become a ‘Rights Respecting School’ at Bronze Award level, which is given on behalf of Unicef UK.

Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working for children and young people and their rights. In 1989, governments across the world agreed that all children have the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their potential.  Children at West Boldon Primary will learn about their own rights, the rights of others and how they can be a force for change and equality in both their time at school and in their own futures.

As part of our work towards this award, we will be hosting a ShoeShare event, where we ask for donations of old or unwanted shoes (no holes or broken soles, please!). These shoes are then donated for re-use through a local Clarks store, earning a donation towards Unicef’s work and supporting those in need. This event will take place during the week beginning 13th December. Shoes can be brought to the Main Office or given to your child’s class team.

We really hope that you will be able to support our school on our journey towards becoming a Unicef UK Rights Respecting School.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask or visit unicef.org.uk/crc or www.unicef.org.uk/rrsa.

Question Time with Mrs Garr

9th December 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Last week, Year 4 had a chance to interview Mrs Garr as part of our new topic Cry Freedom.

We wanted to ask her about her job as Head Teacher, how she uses her authority for good and what she does and doesn’t enjoy about her job.

The children (and staff) found out so much information about Mrs Garr and it really helped us understand how some people have jobs or positions that give them authority and power over others.

Anti-Bullying Week 2021

19th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson
Anti-Bullying Week: One Kind Word

At West Boldon we celebrated Anti-Bullying Week during the week 15th-19th November 2021.

This year’s theme is ‘One Kind Word’. Kindness is more important today than it has ever been. The isolation of the last year has underlined how little acts of consideration can break down barriers and brighten the lives of the people around us.

Our children were able to come to school wearing odd socks on Monday 15th November to recognise and celebrate all of our individual differences.

Year 1's odd socks for Anti Bullying Week Year 2's odd socks for Anti Bullying Week

Each year group took part in a different activity throughout the week to recognise and understand the importance of Anti-Bullying Week.

As part of Year 3’s lesson they made notes of some ideas of ways they could show kindness and respect to one another:

“smile at people”
“play with them”
“you can keep an eye out for them”
“tell them a joke”

Year 3's ideas to be kinder to one another

Year 5 also showed their understanding of what bullying is. Here are their ideas:

Fundraise and Recycle!

18th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

You may have noticed the new clothing container on school grounds.

We have signed up to the ‘Fundraise and Recycle Ltd’ scheme in a bid to reduce waste, recycle and reuse unloved clothing and goods. Our school will then earn money for every full container.

Please make use of this facility, bring in your unwanted clothing (but still in decent condition) and help us fundraise for our school at the same time!

Maths Week England

13th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson
Maths Week England

As a school we recognised Maths Week England this week, with each year group completing a different maths challenge. Here are some things we got up to…

Year 1

Class 4 enjoyed our Maths Week Challenge this week. The children had to create three robots and use the vocabulary big, bigger, biggest to describe them. Some of the children extended their own learning by adding the length of the robots legs, body and head together. It was a tricky task to add three numbers together so they chose to use numicon to help them

During maths week Class 3 took on the challenge of seeing how many different ways we could sort the houses. The children were really good at grouping the houses and talking about the similarities and differences. Some children even recorded their findings in a list.

Year 3 and 4

Year 3 and 4 recognised Maths Week by taking part in a Times Table Rockstars Competition. They were able to play for 1 hour a day to earn points. The children loved the competitive element and we have some fantastic mathematicians in Lower Key Stage 2!

At the end of the week, the scores were totalled and below are the leaderboards for the pupil totals (top 10 players) and the class totals. Well done to all of the children who took part!

Year 6

As part of Maths Week England, Year 6 have taken part in fun maths activities all week. We have participated in the daily challenges and worked in groups to solve some ‘magic maths’, where we learnt the magic of number through cards. Great fun was had on Mangahigh as we took part in a live lesson on geometric properties.

Children gathering to show their respect at 11am We will remember them...

Whilst we aren’t able to hold full school events inside due to COVID, we were thankfully still able to go outside to recognise Remembrance Day.

We heard the Last Post and stood in silence for two minutes to show our respect.

Crossing the Tawi River

7th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 continued their journey through India this week, following in the footsteps of adventurer Levison Wood.

Having collected our supplies on previous missions, this week our aim was to cross the Tawi River during flood season.

The children had to get the whole team and their equipment across the hall without touching the floor (the floor represented the fast moving river).

They showed great teamwork and communication skills and some team members showed great leadership and problem solving skills.

Rocking their new topic!

7th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

Year 4 started a new topic about rocks and fossils this week.

We found out about different types of rocks such as metamorphic and sedimentary, we looked at which rocks fall into these categories and then spent time examining and drawing different rocks in detail.

Here we are using our magnifying glasses to look closely at rocks to help us with drawing them. We also tested several rocks (both man made and natural) to see whether they were permeable or impermeable.
