Year 3 Autumn 1 Focus Text

17th September 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This half term, Year 3 will be reading ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura. The story revolves around a young boy who finds himself back in time in the Stone Age! He meets a young girl and they become friends, having lots of interesting adventures together.

In our literacy lessons we will be focusing on narrative. We will be using this story to write our own retelling following Talk for Writing, then eventually we will write our own narrative where the main character travels in time.

Children in Year 2 will be looking at the text ‘Wild’ by Emily Hughes.

A little wide eyed girl stares out from the cover of this beautiful picture book. The child found in the jungle is taught to talk by the birds, eat by the bears and play by foxes and she is ‘wild’.

Then she meets the humans…

Over the next half term, children in Year 2 will be making exciting predictions about who the girl is, writing a letter of persuasion and talking about the beautiful setting of the story.

Year 1 and 1/2 Autumn 1 Focus Text

17th September 2020Miss K. Wilkinson

This term in Year 1 and 1/2 we are going to be reading ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ by Judith Kerr.

We love this story and cannot wait to start doing some fantastic activities.

We are going to be looking at speech and thought by talking about how each character feels and what they say in the story. We will be using speech and thought bubbles to explore this in our writing. We will also be looking at conjunctions to extend our sentences, which will help us towards the end of the term in our story retell. We will be creating our own story maps, exploring different characters and even making our own invitations to tea for very own tea party!

Fun with instructions

13th March 2020R Smith

In Literacy this week, Class 9 have been learning about instruction writing and how important it is to write clear and precise instructions. We have been learning about Lent in RE so decided to write instructions for making (microwave) pancakes.  In small groups, we drafted the method step by step. We then tried to follow our instructions exactly as we had written them. The children quickly realised that they had not written clear and precise instructions which led to hilarious results. Some groups forgot to open the pancakes, some groups didn’t turn the microwave on, and some left their toppings in the bag or jar.

The children went back and improved their instructions so they could actually make their pancakes successfully and more importantly eat them.

Year 4’s Trip to EDF Power Station and Teesmouth Field Centre

13th March 2020R Smith

Class 8 recently enjoyed a trip to EDF Power Station in Hartlepool. The children’s Science topic during the Autumn Term was ‘Electricity’ and the trip provided them with a great opportunity to extend their knowledge further. The children enjoyed a presentation where they learned that Hartlepool Power Station is a nuclear power station on the north east coast of England, how they make electricity there and how it is capable of supplying electricity to over 2 million UK homes.

In preparation for our Summer Term Science topic, ‘Living Things and their Habitats’ the children had an opportunity to explore the habitat of, and categorise local living creatures. Following a presentation from the staff at Teesmouth Field Centre, the children enjoyed a scavenger hunt on Teesmouth Beach – using their fingers like a bird’s beak to dig down into the sand. The children found evidence of a variety of animals and habitats – such as; Cockle Shells, Razor Shells, Crabs, Worm Casts, Snail Shells, Sand Dunes, Marram Grass and many more.

Science – which magnets are the strongest?

13th March 2020R Smith

This week in science, Year 3 have been investigating which magnets are the strongest. We know it’s not just about the size of the magnet, but the strength of a magnet’s magnetic field. We tested out 5 different magnets to see how many paper clips would be attracted to each. Here is a pictogram of our results:

Digging deeper in maths

28th February 2020R Smith

This week in number we have begun to learn about the numbers beyond 5.  We are digging deeper when learning about numbers and investigating different ways to make our numbers.

We have stunned our teachers with how we are able to remember and transfer our knowledge of number bonds to 5 to these bigger numbers.  We demonstrated that we have really understood the part-whole method as we were quickly able to see how we could split amounts in to two parts and then recombine to get our total.

Pancake Day

28th February 2020R Smith

This week in Reception we have celebrated Pancake Day by making our very own delicious pancakes.

We first, looked at a recipe to find which ingredients we needed and wrote shopping lists.  We added the toppings we would like to the lists in the hope the teachers might treat us!  Some of us requested whipped cream and strawberries!

On Shrove Tuesday we ordered the instructions and learnt to recite them using actions and sequencing words.

We all worked very sensibly in our cooking teams when making our pancakes.

The most exciting part was when we got to eat our pancakes.  We thought they were yummy, delicious, nice, tasty and scrumptious.

Over the rest of the week we have learnt about how instructions are bossy and have time words.  We have had a go at writing our own instructions.

When we were sure our work was the very best it could be, we submitted them to the BBC’s 500 Words competition. This week we received our certificates!
