Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Dennis Eagle visits Year 3

7th March 2026Miss K. Wilkinson

This week we were so excited to welcome Dennis Eagle to the Rescue Mobile Classroom to visit our eco-friendly Year 3’s. It’s more than just a bus—it’s a rolling hub of inspiration dedicated to making our community cleaner and greener.

Why we love Dennis:
- Interactive Learning: Teaching the next generation about the “Three Rs” (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) in a way that’s actually fun.
- Community Pride: Empowering South Tyneside students to take small steps that make a massive impact on our local environment.
– Future-Proofing: Building a sustainable legacy for our parks, beaches, and streets.

Today we were tackling litter and learning about what goes in what bin and the reasons why. learning. Dennis and the team are proving that being “green” isn’t a chore—it’s a superpower!

Let’s keep South Tyneside beautiful!

Using our POWERS for GOOD this Anti-Bullying Week

11th November 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

Today, our Year 3 pupils were delighted to welcome Vicky from KalmaLife as part of our Anti-Bullying Week activities.

During the session, the children explored the power of their breath — discovering how simple breathing techniques can help them manage big feelings, stay calm in tricky situations, and show kindness and empathy towards others. They also learned how to share these calming strategies with friends, helping to create a more caring and supportive school community.

The workshop ended with a peaceful guided meditation, leaving everyone feeling relaxed, centered, and ready to use their inner calm to make a positive difference.

Thank you to Vicky and KalmaLife for such a wonderful and meaningful session!

Year 3 Explore Active Travel in ‘5 Minute Walk Zone’ with Sustrans

23rd May 2025Miss K. Wilkinson

Sustrans-Logo

Yesterday, our Year 3 children had a wonderful visit from Abi at Sustrans to create a ‘5 Minute Walk Zone.’

The aim of the ‘5 minute walk zone’ is to encourage our families to park a little further from the school gates and enjoy a short walk to school, helping to reduce congestion and support well-being through fresh air and physical activity.

Working in pairs, each child received a map and a pencil before setting off on three separate walks from the school gate, each lasting five minutes in a different direction. At each stop point, children identified their location to help map out the boundaries of our very own ‘5 Minute Walk Zone.’

The data collected during the walk will now be used to create an informative leaflet to be shared with the wider school community, encouraging everyone to consider more active and sustainable travel choices.

Well done, Year 3, for your enthusiastic participation and thoughtful contributions, and a big thank you to Abi for a wonderful session! As a school, we are looking forward to working with Sustrans on more projects before the end of this academic year so watch this space!

PRIDE!

30th June 2023Miss K. Wilkinson

On Rainbow Friday Year 3 discussed the meaning of pride. They thought about times where they have felt proud of themselves or others, and thought about why pride is important to LGBTQ+ people. They also learnt about some of the origins of the rainbow flag, including what each colour represents, before creating their own progress flags out of collage materials.

Children at West Boldon Primary celebrated Children’s Mental Health Week this week (February 7th – 13th 2022).

Mrs Askwith (our pastoral and wellbeing mentor) spent some time with each class, talking about our own wellbeing, spreading kindness, and focussing on this year’s theme ‘Growing Together’.

Children also took part in a yoga session where they channelled all of their energy, worries and anxieties. Everyone came out of their session incredibly calm!

Finally, on Friday, to round off the week, children were invited to come to school wearing their most expressive outfits to ‘Dress to Express’, sharing their individuality and celebrating their uniqueness.

What a wonderful week we have had!

Safer Internet Day 2022

11th February 2022Miss K. Wilkinson
Safer Internet Day logo

On Tuesday 8th February 2022, children in West Boldon Primary recognised Safer Internet Day.

In their PSHE lessons, they discussed this year’s theme: ‘All fun and games? Exploring respect and relationships online’. Here are some thing they have been doing to recognise and learn about this important day.

Year 1

Year 1 listened to a story about Digiduck and how to behave kindly online and how to keep ourselves safe. They discussed and sorted out things we should and shouldn’t do online and pretended to be Digiduck and Wise_Owl to help others to know what to do or not do online.

Year 2

Watch the video below to see Year 2 play Internet Traffic Light game for internet safety day. If they think an app/website is green (right for them) they can step forward twice, if they’re unsure (yellow) and if they think it is not right for then (red) they stand still.

Children explained why they chose each traffic light for each app/website and how they can be safe online.

Year 3

Children in Year 3 thought about their online community, and their online world. They learned that their community refers to the people they know in real life, such as friends and family, and their world refers to the people they don’t know in real life, such as celebrities, footballers and Youtubers.

They wrote down 3 people from their community, and 2 people from their world – thinking for each about how they connect with these people online. They then talked about how we communicate with others in many different ways.

Year 4

As part of Safer Internet Day Year 4 looked at how our actions and words can harm others.
We learned about norms and how our community has lots of norms to help us stay happy and healthy.

In small groups we created a norm that would help us stay safe on the internet. We then signed it to pledge that we would stick to it.

Year 6

Year 6 read Sita’s story and discussed how they would respond, if they were her, to the different scenarios. They thought about the best ways to keep safe, while also benefit the friendship.

Anti-Bullying Week 2021

19th November 2021Miss K. Wilkinson
Anti-Bullying Week: One Kind Word

At West Boldon we celebrated Anti-Bullying Week during the week 15th-19th November 2021.

This year’s theme is ‘One Kind Word’. Kindness is more important today than it has ever been. The isolation of the last year has underlined how little acts of consideration can break down barriers and brighten the lives of the people around us.

Our children were able to come to school wearing odd socks on Monday 15th November to recognise and celebrate all of our individual differences.

Year 1's odd socks for Anti Bullying Week Year 2's odd socks for Anti Bullying Week

Each year group took part in a different activity throughout the week to recognise and understand the importance of Anti-Bullying Week.

As part of Year 3’s lesson they made notes of some ideas of ways they could show kindness and respect to one another:

“smile at people”
“play with them”
“you can keep an eye out for them”
“tell them a joke”

Year 3's ideas to be kinder to one another

Year 5 also showed their understanding of what bullying is. Here are their ideas:

Year 3 mini teachers

21st October 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

The children in Year 3 have had fun this week taking on the role of the teacher.

They had to plan a lesson in pairs, thinking about what they wanted to teach, resources needed and behaviour expectations.

Today they implemented their plans and had 10 minutes to teach a new skill to the class.

We had lessons such as times tables, maths partitioning and drawing. I think we have some future teachers in the making.

The ‘Secrets Jar’

23rd September 2021Miss K. Wilkinson

As part of Year 3’s 3D PSHE unit, they are learning about e-Safety. Today they discussed the importance of privacy and keeping our personal information safe.

In this lesson they had to write down a secret in ‘invisible ink’ on a post it note (using their finger!) and put them in the secrets jar. They then imagined how they would feel if the jar was stolen!

This led on to a great discussion about what things we should keep to ourself online, and how to keep ourselves and our ‘secrets’ and personal information safe from harm.
